〜折(に) (~ori (ni)) — when / on the occasion (polite)

A polite, soft 「とき」— 「来日の折には」= when you get the chance to come to Japan.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + の + 折(に)
    Verb V辞書形/Vた + 折(に)

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • A Japanese colleague says 「ネパールに帰った折には、ご家族によろしくお伝えください」— 'when you get the chance to go back to Nepal, please give my regards to your family'.
    • It is the word of letters and courteous conversation.

    Meaning

    • 「〜折(おり)」= 'on the occasion, when' — the feeling is 'when the occasion arises', not an order.
    • So what follows is usually an invitation or request: ぜひ〜てください・お立ち寄りください.

    How to attach

    • N+の: 来日の折
    • A verb in dictionary or た-form: 上京した折に
    • For emphasis you also hear 「折には」or 「折は」.

    Versus what you know

If 「〜際」is the stiff 'when' of a notice board, 「〜折」is its soft, warm cousin.

    Watch out

    • 折 is for good occasions only — for an accident or illness nobody says 「事故の折に」; use 「とき」.
    • And with friends, not 折 but とき.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    来日の折には、ぜひご連絡ください。

    らいにちのおりには、ぜひごれんらくください。

When you come to Japan, please do get in touch.

    上京した折に、先生にお会いした。

    じょうきょうしたおりに、せんせいにおあいした。

When I went up to Tokyo, I met my teacher.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 上京する = to go to Tokyo → た-form 上京した → 「折に」 → then what was done on that occasion (polite お会いした).

    お近くにお越しの折は、お立ち寄りください。

    おちかくにおこしのおりは、おたちよりください。

When you are in the area, please drop by.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) お越し = the respectful noun for 'coming' → 「の」 → 「折」 → 「は」 → then the invitation: お立ち寄りください.
