〜てこのかた (~te konokata) — ever since (written, wistful)

The same meaning as 「以来」with an old-fashioned, wistful taste — 「生まれてこのかた」= ever since I was born.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vて + このかた

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

In writing, essays and speeches, or when looking back on the past with feeling.

    Meaning

    • 「〜てこのかた」= 'ever since, up to today' — the same meaning as 「〜て以来」.
    • A state still true now follows, often something like 「一度も〜ない」.

    How to attach

    • Vて + このかた: 来てこのかた・けがをしてこのかた
    • The set phrase you will hear most: 「生まれてこのかた」= ever since I was born

    Versus what you know

    • Same meaning as the previous page's 「〜て以来」; 「このかた」is a little old-fashioned and wistful, more in writing.
    • 「以来」also attaches straight to an event noun (卒業以来); 「このかた」mostly follows Vて.

    Watch out

    • Rare in everyday speech — with friends 「〜てから」or 「〜て以来」is more natural.
    • Like 「以来」, it is never followed by a future plan.
