〜て以来 (~te irai) — ever since (and still)

From that moment right up to now, the same state — 「日本に来て以来」= ever since I came to Japan.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vて + 以来
    N N + 以来

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

Three years in Japan and not one trip home: 「日本に来て以来、一度も国に帰っていない」

    Meaning

    • 「〜て以来(いらい)」= 'from that day to today, without a break, it has been like this'.
    • After it comes a state still true now (ずっと〜ている・〜ていない).

    How to attach

    • Verb: Vて + 以来 (来て以来)
    • Name of an event: N + 以来 (卒業以来・入社以来)

    Versus what you know

    • N5「〜てから」(「日本に来てから、働いています」) says this too; 「以来」carries the length of time and the emotion.
    • The next page, 「〜てこのかた」, means the same, a little old-fashioned and wistful, more in writing.

    Watch out

    • Tomorrow's plan never follows it.
    • It does not work for yesterday — 「昨日会って以来」sounds odd, 「3年前に会って以来」is fine.
