Haste or duty says 'I can't stay like this' — 寝てはいられない (I can't stay in bed).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- 「寝てはいられない」— work starts at six tomorrow, I can't stay in bed tonight.
- 「待ってられない」— my friend is late, I can't keep waiting, let's go.
- There is always a reason of haste, worry or duty next to it: 仕事があるから・試験が近いから・遅刻しちゃうから.
Meaning
- 「〜てはいられない」says 'I can't keep this state going; I have to get up and do something'.
- Second sense: 'I'm not in a position to do it' — 「仕事があるから寝てはいられない」can mean 'I must get up and work' or 'I'm so busy I can't sleep'.
- It also takes a noun: 「いつまでも子どもではいられない」= I can't stay a child forever.
How to attach
- Vて + はいられない (寝て → 寝てはいられない)
- N + ではいられない (子どもではいられない)
- In speech て + は fuse into 「ちゃいられない」(食べちゃいられない)
- Verbs whose て-form ends in 「で」take 「じゃいられない」(遊んじゃいられない・読んじゃいられない)
- Faster still: 「てられない」「てらんない」(見てらんない)
Versus what you know
- N4It is built from 「〜ている」+ 「られない」— 「寝ている」→ 「寝てはいられない」— and the 「は」in the middle adds the stress 'I certainly can't just lie here'.
- 「〜てばかりはいられない」(遊んでばかりはいられない) has its own page — that one is 'I can't just keep doing only this'.
Watch out
- Keep apart 「てはいけない」(must not — a rule) and 「てはいられない」(can't stay like this — my situation).
- 「寝てはいけない」means someone forbids it; 「寝てはいられない」means I myself have to get up.
