お/ご〜申し上げる (o/go~mōshiageru) — I (humbly) do ~ for you
Humble speech that bows lower than お〜する — mail closings, apologies and speeches.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- The last line of every mail to a client: 「今後ともよろしくお願い申し上げます」.
- When a delivery is late the company writes 「深くおわび申し上げます」, the New Year card says 「お祈り申し上げます」, a presentation opens with 「私からご説明申し上げます」.
Meaning
- 「お/ご〜申し上げる」= an even more polite form of お/ご〜する — used when you do something for the other person.
- 申し上げる alone means 'say' (言う), but in お/ご〜申し上げる it means 'do' (する).
- ご説明申し上げます = I explain, おわび申し上げます = I apologise — not 'I say'.
How to attach
- お + the ます-stem (待ちます → お待ち申し上げております)
- ご + a する-noun (連絡 → ご連絡申し上げます)
- It goes with words like 「喜ぶ・祈る・答える・案内・相談・紹介」— greetings, wishes, apologies, giving information: the 'formal, from-the-heart' actions.
Versus what you know
N4You learned 「お〜する/ご〜する」(お持ちします、ご案内します) for your own action, and 「申す」as the humble 言う — 申し上げる bows even lower.
Watch out
- For carrying a customer's bag 「お持ちします」is enough; 「お持ち申し上げます」is too much.
- Since it is humble, it is only for your own (or your company's) action — never 「お客様がご説明申し上げました」about something the customer did.

💡 Hint: 見舞う is a native verb — お or ご? Is し added?
A native verb takes お + ます-stem: お見舞い申し上げます. No し.
Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: This is humble speech — whose action does it take?
お/ご〜申し上げる is only for your own action; the customer's action needs respectful speech: お客様がご説明くださいました.
In 「ご報告申し上げます」, what does 申し上げる mean?
💡 Hint: 申し上げる alone and お/ご〜申し上げる differ.
In お/ご〜申し上げる, 申し上げる means 「する」, not 「言う」. ご報告申し上げます = I report.
