    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

The 文章の文法 part of the exam tests exactly this: it gives the opening and asks you to pick the ending, or gives the ending and asks for the opening word.

    Meaning

    • The adverb at the start of the sentence decides how the sentence must end.
    • The moment a friend says 「決して…」your brain should already be waiting for 「〜ない」— 「店長の悪口は決して言いません」.
    • These pairs fall into six groups by meaning: ① negative (〜ない) ② guessing ③ looks like ④ change ⑤ question ⑥ already done — the table lists the pairs for each group.

    Versus what you know

N3You met 「決して」「めったに」「少しも」one at a time; at N2 they all sit in one table and teach this one rule.

    Watch out

    • When you see the adverb, ask 'what ending is its partner?'.
    • If 「たいして」is followed by 「おいしい」the sentence is wrong — it must be 「たいしておいしくない」.
    • After 「まるで」you need 「〜かのようだ」, not 「〜そうだ」.

    Also

    • New pairs at N2: 「なにも〜ない」(「なにもそんなに怒ることはないでしょう」= there is no need to get that angry), 「必ずしも〜とは限らない」(it is not always so), and 「きっと〜に違いない」.
    • More samples: 「今にも泣き出しそうな顔」(a face about to burst into tears), 「いったい何を考えているのか」(what on earth is he thinking?), 「すでに準備は整っている」(everything is already ready).

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    時給が高い仕事が必ずしもいい仕事とは限らない。

    じきゅうがたかいしごとがかならずしもいいしごととはかぎらない。

A job with high hourly pay is not necessarily a good job.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 必ずしも = (it isn't) always → a word from the negative group → so the ending must be 「〜ない」 → here the paired form 「とは限らない」 = it isn't necessarily so.

    田中さんは今ごろきっと空港で困っているに違いない。

    たなかさんはいまごろきっとくうこうでこまっているにちがいない。

Tanaka must surely be having trouble at the airport right now.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) きっと = surely → the guessing group → at the end, 「に違いない」 ("must be", learned in N3) → 困っている + に違いない = must be in trouble.

    来日してから、弟の日本語は一段と上手になった。

    らいにちしてから、おとうとのにほんごはいちだんとじょうずになった。

Since coming to Japan, my brother's Japanese has become noticeably better.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 一段と = one level more → the change group → the ending needs 「〜なる/なった」 → 上手に + なった = got better.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「こんなきれいな夕日は_見られない。」— which adverb fits?

💡 Hint: The ending is 「〜ない」— which group does that need?
