When to use it
The 文章の文法 part of the exam asks you to match exactly these openings and endings.
Meaning
- A few 'opening expressions' fix the ending — the way a sentence starts already settles how it must end.
- There are five main pairs — なぜなら → からである, 〜かというと → そんなことはない, 〜には → が必要だ and so on.
- ① Reason: 「なぜなら・というのは・なぜかというと … 〜からである/〜ためである」— you learned 「なぜなら〜からだ」at N3; in written Japanese the ending is 「〜からである」.
- ② 「〜かというと … そんなことはない/〜わけではない」— you pose 'is it X?' and then deny it yourself.
- ③ 「〜のは … 〜からである/〜ためである」— the pattern that puts the reason at the end: 「遅れたのは、電車が止まったためである」(the written form of N3's 「〜のは〜からだ」).
- ④ Place + には — what exists where: 「この町には、ネパール人の店が多い」.
- ⑤ Dictionary form + には — what it takes to do X: 「N2に合格するには、毎日の勉強が必要だ」.
Versus what you know
On the previous page adverbs fixed the ending; here the same job is done by opening expressions.
Watch out
- Starting with 「なぜなら」and finishing with a plain 「〜です」is wrong.
- A denial always follows 「〜かというと」; 'yes, it really is easy' never does.
- ④ and ⑤ both use 「には」— place + には usually ends in 'there is', verb + には in 'is needed / takes'. Train the habit: see the opener and already know which family the ending belongs to.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
今年は国に帰らない。なぜなら、飛行機代が高すぎるからである。
ことしはくににかえらない。なぜなら、ひこうきだいがたかすぎるからである。
I am not going home this year. That is because the airfare is far too expensive.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) なぜなら = because → the start of the reason group → the reason in the middle: 飛行機代が高すぎる → the ending is the written form 「からである」 (the formal version of N3's からだ).
コンビニの仕事が簡単かというと、そんなことはない。
コンビニのしごとがかんたんかというと、そんなことはない。
Is convenience-store work easy? Not at all.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 簡単 = easy → 「かというと」 = is it easy, then? — we ask ourselves → once this starts, the ending is always a denial → そんなことはない = not at all.
N2に合格するには、毎日の勉強が必要だ。
N2にごうかくするには、まいにちのべんきょうがひつようだ。
To pass N2, you need daily study.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 合格する = to pass (V辞書形) → we attach 「には」 = in order to pass → since it's a verb + には, the ending comes from the "need / takes" group → 毎日の勉強が必要だ.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「この町には、ネパール人の店が_。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Place + には → which kind of ending?
Place + には takes an existence ending: がいる・がある・が多い・が見られる. 「わけではない」pairs with 〜かというと, 「からである」with a reason.
In which sentence do the opener and the ending not match?
💡 Hint: What has to follow 「〜かというと」?
「〜かというと」poses 'is it?' and must be followed by a denial: 「そんなことはない」. Agreeing with 'とても簡単だ' is not possible.
In written Japanese, which ending follows 「なぜなら」?
💡 Hint: The reason pair.
なぜなら・というのは → 〜からである/〜ためである — the written form of N3's 「〜からだ」.
