接続表現の整理 (setsuzoku hyōgen no seiri) — connectives by job
しかも・ところが・つまり・さて — thirty connectives, sorted into four jobs.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
The exam gives a passage with a gap and asks which connective goes there; you can only answer if you see the relation between what comes before and after.
Meaning
- The connectives are sorted into four groups by the job they do: A 並べる, B 論理, C 補う, D 話題転換.
- For the reader these words are road signs — 「ところが」means 'the opposite is coming', 「つまり」means 'a summary is coming'.
Versus what you know
N3In Lesson 22 you met 「だから」「すると」「つまり」「しかも」「ところが」and friends one by one; here they are all sorted by job.
Watch out
- A–C keep the topic; only D changes it.
- Written Japanese uses 「しかし・だが」where conversation uses 「でも・けど」— the next page covers this.
Also
- A 並べる (lining up): adding — しかも・そのうえ・さらに・そればかりか・そればかりでなく (adding something even bigger; そればかりか・そればかりでなく are new); comparing — それに対して・一方; one of two — あるいは (another possibility), それとも (an alternative in a question).
- B 論理 (logical link): result — そのため・したがって・そこで・すると・このように (a conclusion pulling the points together)・こうして ('and so', wrapping up a result) — このように and こうして are new; reason — なぜなら・というのは (with 〜からだ at the end); against expectation — だが・ところが・それなのに・それでも.
- C 補う (filling in): in other words — つまり・要するに・いわば ('so to speak', for a comparison — new); what is missing — ただし (exception)・ただ (small objection)・もっとも (correcting an expectation)・なお (extra information).
- D 話題転換 (changing topic): さて (now to the main point — in mail 「お元気ですか。さて、今日は…」)・ところで (off in a different direction).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
店長は日本語を直してくれた。そればかりか、履歴書の書き方まで教えてくれた。
てんちょうはにほんごをなおしてくれた。そればかりか、りれきしょのかきかたまでおしえてくれた。
The manager corrected my Japanese. Not only that, they even taught me how to write a résumé.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 文1 = the manager corrected my Japanese → 「そればかりか」 = not only that (group A, adding) → in 文2, an even bigger kindness: 履歴書の書き方まで教えてくれた → 「まで」 adds emphasis: "even".
アルバイトを見つけ、部屋も決まった。こうして、私の日本での生活が始まった。
アルバイトをみつけ、へやもきまった。こうして、わたしのにほんでのせいかつがはじまった。
I found a part-time job and got a room sorted out. And so my life in Japan began.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 文1 = found a job, got a room (two or three events) → 「こうして」 = in this way (group B, gathering it up into a result) → 文2 = my life began.
このコンビニは24時間開いていて、何でも売っている。いわば、町の小さな市場だ。
このコンビニは24じかんあいていて、なんでもうっている。いわば、まちのちいさなしじょうだ。
This convenience store is open 24 hours and sells everything. It is, so to speak, the town's little market.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 文1 = a description of the convenience store → 「いわば」 = so to speak (group C, in other words — a metaphor) → 文2 sums it up in one picture: 町の小さな市場.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「説明会は3時までです。_、その後ご質問を受け付けます。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Adding a piece of extra information (group C).
「なお」adds a note of extra information. さて changes the topic, いわば gives a comparison, それとも offers an alternative in a question.
In which sentence is the connective wrong?
💡 Hint: Which word moves a mail from greetings to the main point?
Moving from greetings to the main point needs 「さて」(group D). 「すると」means 'and then (as a result)' and cannot change the topic.
「このアニメを知らない日本人はいないだろう。_、国民的アニメだ。」— which fits?
💡 Hint: Saying it again as a comparison.
「いわば」= so to speak — restates the first sentence as a comparison (group C). ただし = exception, ところが = the opposite, それとも = an alternative in a question.
