硬い表現 ↔ 日常表現 (katai hyōgen ↔ nichijō hyōgen) — formal ↔ everyday equivalents
〜のみならず ↔ 〜だけじゃなくて, 〜おそれがある ↔ 〜かもしれない — one text, one style.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
If a letter to the 市役所 contains 「こんな問題は絶対無理なんじゃない」, the reader feels they are reading a LINE message to a friend.
Meaning
- Most N2 forms are simply the N3 forms you already know 'wearing a suit' — 「〜のみならず」instead of 「〜だけじゃなくて」, 「〜おそれがある」instead of 「〜かもしれない」.
- This page has a single rule: one text, one style — do not mix written (硬い) and everyday (日常) forms.
Watch out
- In the 文章の文法 part of the exam a written passage is given and one option is a spoken form — cross that option out at once.
- Both columns are correct; neither is wrong. The mistake is mixing.
- Tell a friend 「試験に合格せざるを得ない」and they laugh; write 「合格しなくちゃ」in a report and you lose marks.
Also
- Four basics of written style: ① all 普通体 or all 丁寧体 — never switch halfway.
- ② No contractions — 「じゃない → ではない」「っていうか → というより」「って → と」「んだよ → のだ」.
- ③ No dropped particles — not 「現場行って」but 「現場へ行って」.
- ④ No talking straight to the reader — not the 敬語 「ご紹介した」but 「述べた」; not 「〜てください」but 「〜てほしい・〜てもらいたい・〜たほうがいい」.
- Vocabulary follows the same rule — written Japanese leans on 漢語 (非常に・極めて・徐々に・述べる); the full pairs are in the table.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
この店は日本語のみならず、英語やネパール語でも案内している。
このみせはにほんごのみならず、えいごやネパールごでもあんないしている。
This shop gives information not only in Japanese but also in English and Nepali.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 日本語 = Japanese → with a friend you'd say 「日本語だけじゃなくて」 → a shop notice is written language, so 「のみならず」 → then the "also" part: 英語やネパール語でも.
台風のため、明日の説明会は中止となるおそれがある。
たいふうのため、あしたのせつめいかいはちゅうしとなるおそれがある。
Because of the typhoon, tomorrow's briefing may have to be canceled.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 台風 = typhoon → the reason in written form: 台風のため (in speech, 台風なものだから) → 中止となる = to be canceled → a bad possibility in written form: おそれがある (in speech, かもしれない) → both are written forms in one sentence, so it matches.
このような仕事は非常に難しい。しかし、やりがいがある。
このようなしごとはひじょうにむずかしい。しかし、やりがいがある。
Work of this kind is extremely hard. However, it is rewarding.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) In speech: こんな仕事はとても難しい。でも… → in a report, swap all three words: こんな → このような, とても → 非常に, でも → しかし → same meaning; only the clothes have changed.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
In a report: 「大雨_、電車が止まった。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The written way to give a reason.
Written Japanese gives the reason with 「〜のため」. 「ものだから」is a spoken excuse; なんか and だって are spoken too.
Which sentence does not belong in a written text?
💡 Hint: Look for contractions and 「んだよ」.
「なんじゃない」and 「んだよ」are spoken; the written version is 「無理ではあるまいかと思うのだ」. The other three (極めて・のみならず・にほかならない) are all written style.
What is the everyday partner of 「〜ざるを得ない」?
💡 Hint: The short way to say 'have to'.
ざるを得ない ↔ なくちゃ・なきゃ. かもしれない pairs with おそれがある, にきまっている with に相違ない, だって with であっても.
