〜ながら[前置き] (~nagara [preface]) — regrettably / with respect / if I may (fixed openers)
Ready-made openers before bad news or a request — 「残念ながら」「勝手ながら」— the language of work mail.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- In mail to the 店長: 「勝手ながら、来週の金曜日はお休みをいただきたく存じます」(if I may, I would like to take next Friday off).
- From a company to a customer: 「残念ながら、その商品は販売を終了いたしました」(regrettably, that product has been discontinued).
- A farewell speech's 「残念ながら職場を離れることになりました」is the same.
Meaning
- A few ready-made phrases built from 「ながら」, placed right before bad news or a request.
- They admit the awkward situation (残念・失礼・勝手・及ばず) up front as a 前置き: 'I know this is not ideal, but I will say it'.
How to attach
- 「残念ながら」— regrettably
- 「失礼ながら」— with respect, though it may sound rude
- 「勝手ながら」— if I may / sorry for the inconvenience my request causes
- 「及ばずながら」— modest as it is / as best I can
- Learn these four as set phrases; put them at the start of the sentence with a comma.
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「〜ながら(も)」meaning 'although': 「狭いながらも楽しい家」「知っていながら言わなかった」.
- 「すみませんが」only apologises; these phrases leave the impression 'formal, prepared, respectful'.
Watch out
- Never add 「も」— 残念ながらも ✗.
- In a chat with friends 「残念だけど」is the right choice.
