〜ことは〜が (~koto wa ~ga) — it is ~, granted, but…
Repeat the word to concede only halfway — 行ったことは行ったが、覚えていない (I did go, but I don't remember it).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
When someone asks 'is that expensive?': 「高いことは高いが、役に立つ」(it is expensive, granted, but it is useful).
Meaning
- 'Yes, I grant that, but what I really want to say is different' — concede first, then make your own point.
- 「見たことは見たが、わからなかった」(I did see it, but I didn't understand).
How to attach
- The same word twice: AことはAが
- Verb: 行くことは行くが・行ったことは行ったが
- い-adjective: 高いことは高いが
- A な-adjective needs 「な」: 静かなことは静かだが
- 「けど・けれど」can replace が.
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「〜ことは〜が」(見たことは見たが); at N2 it does the same job as 「〜といえば〜が」.
- 「AといえばA」lets a な-adjective drop 「だ」(静かといえば静か), but 「AことはA」needs 「な」(静かなことは静かだ).
Watch out
- 「〜が・〜けど」always follows, and that is where the real point sits.
- With different words before and after (高いことは安いが ✗) the form breaks.

このかばんはたかいことはたかいが、とてもじょうぶだ。

あたらしいしごとはたいへんなことはたいへんだけど、まいにちたのしい。
The new job is tough, granted, but every day is fun.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 大変だ = tough (な-adj) → keep 「な」: 大変な → 「ことは」 → 大変だ again + けど → then the real point: 毎日楽しい.
