〜といえば[譲歩] (~to ieba [concession]) — granted… but
「便利といえば便利だが…」— yes, granted, but… — repeat the word to concede only halfway.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Room-hunting, a friend asks if your flat is convenient: 「便利といえば便利だけど、家賃が高い」(convenient, granted, but the rent is high) — you only half agree.
- When the manager asks if the job is easy: 「簡単といえば簡単ですが、時間がかかります」— polite, but honest.
Meaning
- 'Yes, I grant that, but what I really want to say is different'.
- It differs from 「便利だけど」: repeating the word adds hesitation, 'not that much, if you make me say it'.
How to attach
- You must say the same word twice: 「AといえばA」
- 「おいしいといえばおいしい」「行ったといえば行った」「静かといえば静か」(な-adjectives and nouns may drop 「だ」)
- 「〜が・〜けど・〜けれど」or 「ただ…」follows.
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「〜といえば」as 'speaking of that, it reminds me' — a topic switch: 「ハワイといえば、さち子さんが…」; here the meaning is different — conceding halfway.
- 「〜ことは〜が」(見たことは見たが), which does the same job, has its own page.
Watch out
- The real point always sits after 「〜が・〜けど」.
- Put different words before and after (便利といえば安い ✗) and the form breaks.

今のアパートは駅から近いといえば近いけど、家賃が高すぎる。
いまのアパートはえきからちかいといえばちかいけど、やちんがたかすぎる。
My current apartment is close to the station, granted, but the rent is far too high.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 近い = close → 「といえば」 → the same 近い again → 「けど」 = it is close, but → then the real complaint: 家賃が高すぎる.
この仕事は簡単といえば簡単ですが、毎日同じことの繰り返しです。
このしごとはかんたんといえばかんたんですが、まいにちおなじことのくりかえしです。
This job is easy enough, I suppose, but it is the same thing over and over every day.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 簡単だ = easy (な-adj) → drop 「だ」 and add 「といえば」 → 簡単 again + ですが (polite) → then the real point: 繰り返しです.
日本語が話せるといえば話せますが、敬語はまだ苦手です。
にほんごがはなせるといえばはなせますが、けいごはまだにがてです。
I can speak Japanese, granted, but I'm still weak at keigo.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 話せる = I can speak → 「といえば」 → the same verb again as 話せます + が (polite) → then the real point: 敬語はまだ苦手.
