〜に対して[対比] (~ni taishite [contrast]) — whereas / in contrast to
Two sides set against each other — 「兄は…のに対して、弟は…」— the language of graphs and reports.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You hear it in presentations, reports, when reading a graph and in the news: 「都市で人口が増えているのに対して、農村では減っている」(while the population is growing in cities, in villages it is falling).
- In family talk too: 「兄はスポーツが得意なのに対して、弟は本が好きだ」.
Meaning
Setting two different things face to face — 'A is like this, whereas B is like that'.
How to attach
- A noun takes 「N に対して」directly (前の会長に対して)
- A clause needs 「plain form + の + に対して」
- な-adjectives and nouns take 「な/である」: 「得意なのに対して」「学生であるのに対して」
- In writing 「に対し」also appears.
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「〜に対して」meaning 'towards someone': 「目上の人に対して失礼だ」(rude towards a superior); at N2 the same word takes a second job.
- 「一方(で)」also shows two sides, but 「に対して」stresses 'the exact opposite'.
- 「反面」shows two faces of the same thing; here you have two different subjects (兄 and 弟, 都市 and 農村).
Watch out
The two halves must show a clear difference — you do not use 「に対して」to compare things that are much the same.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
兄がスポーツが得意なのに対して、弟は家で本を読むのが好きだ。
あにがスポーツがとくいなのにたいして、おとうとはいえでほんをよむのがすきだ。
Whereas my older brother is good at sports, my younger brother likes reading at home.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 得意だ = good at (な-adj) → drop 「だ」 and use 「な」: 得意な → we attach 「の」 + 「に対して」 → then the exact opposite side: 弟は….
去年は応募者が50人だったのに対し、今年は120人に増えた。
きょねんはおうぼしゃが50にんだったのにたいし、ことしは120にんにふえた。
Whereas last year there were 50 applicants, this year the number rose to 120.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 50人だった = there were 50 (普通形, past) → 「の」 + 「に対し」 (the short written form) → then a different figure: 今年は120人 — the pattern of reports and graphs.
昼のコンビニは客が多いのに対して、夜はとても静かだ。
ひるのコンビニはきゃくがおおいのにたいして、よるはとてもしずかだ。
The convenience store is full of customers by day, whereas at night it is very quiet.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 多い = many (い-adj, as it is) → 「の」 + 「に対して」 → then the opposite situation: 夜は静か — 昼 and 夜 are two different subjects.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「姉が明るい性格_に対して、妹はおとなしい。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: What goes between a noun and 「の」?
Nouns and な-adjectives drop 「だ」and take 「な」+ の + に対して (or であるのに対して): 性格なのに対して.
In which sentence is 「に対して」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Are the two sides clearly different?
Contrastive に対して needs a clear difference; if both are 背が高い there is no contrast — just say 弟も背が高い.
「目上の人に対して失礼なことを言うな。」— which meaning is this 「に対して」?
💡 Hint: Two sides here, or one person?
This is the N3 meaning — 'towards someone'. The N2 contrast use has two different sides, 「AのにB」.
