〜た上で (~ta ue de) — after (carefully) doing
The serious 「〜てから」— 「相談した上で決める」= consult first, and only then decide.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- When the 店長 asks you to change shifts: 「家族と相談した上で、お返事します」(I will consult my family and then reply).
- At the city office or on a phone contract: 「内容をご確認の上、サインをお願いします」(please check the contents and then sign).
Meaning
「〜た上で」= 'after doing', but here the first action is preparation — think it over, understand it, consult someone, and only then decide.
How to attach
- Vた + 上で: 相談した上で
- N + の + 上で: 確認の上で
- Dropping で after a noun, 「ご確認の上」, is even more formal.
Versus what you know
- N4「〜てから」= 'do, and then': 手を洗ってから食べる — 「た上で」is its serious version.
- The next page's 「〜上で」(dictionary form + 上で) = 'in doing'. The quick test: Vた before 上で means 'after doing'; dictionary form means 'in doing'.
Watch out
- The same person does both halves, and what follows is a deliberate action that comes out of that preparation (決める・返事する・申し込む).
- Not for small everyday matters — 「映画を見た上で食事した」is wrong; say 「見てから/見た後で」.
- Nor for things that simply happen in a natural order, where てから does the job (シャワーを浴びた上で寝る ✗).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
シフトの変更は、店長と相談した上で決めてください。
シフトのへんこうは、てんちょうとそうだんしたうえできめてください。
Please decide on shift changes only after consulting the manager.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 相談する = to consult → Vた: 相談した → we attached 「上で」 (after doing) → then the decision made after that: 決めてください — the same person consults and the same person decides.
内容をご確認の上、こちらにサインをお願いします。
ないようをごかくにんのうえ、こちらにサインをおねがいします。
Please check the contents and then sign here.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ご確認 = checking (a noun, made polite with お/ご) → we attached 「の」: ご確認の → 「上」 without で = even more formal (市役所, contracts) → then the instruction: サインをお願いします.
説明会に参加した上で、申し込むかどうか決めます。
せつめいかいにさんかしたうえで、もうしこむかどうかきめます。
I will attend the information session first, and then decide whether to apply.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 参加する = to take part → Vた: 参加した → 「上で」 = only after doing that → then the decision after it: 決めます.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「よく_上で、お返事します。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: For "after thinking", which form goes before 上で?
For "after doing", it is Vた + 上で: 考えた上で. (考える上で would mean "in thinking" — the other use.)
In which sentence is 「上で」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Everyday matter, or a decision made after preparation?
上で is not for everyday matters; for watching a film and then eating, say 「見てから/見た後で」.
「内容をご確認の_、サインをお願いします。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 'Check first, and only then' — the formal form without で.
N + の + 上(で). ご確認の上 = after checking (city office and contract language). 上に means 'on top of that', which does not fit.
