〜(よ)うとしている (~(y)ō to shite iru) — is about to (a change is on the verge)
The moment just before a change — 「日が沈もうとしている」= the sun is about to set.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- When nature or an event is right on the point of changing by itself — dramatic, formal, like a novel or a broadcast.
- 「日が沈もうとしている」(the sun is about to set), on TV 「決勝戦が今、始まろうとしています」(the final is about to begin), 「さくらが満開になろうとしている」(the cherry blossoms are about to reach full bloom).
Meaning
The feeling: 'the moment just before' — nobody's will is involved here; the change is just about to happen by itself.
How to attach
Volitional form (〜
Versus what you know
- N3「〜(よ)うとする」= 'try to / be about to do': 出かけようとしたとき、電話が鳴った — there a person had the will to do it.
- N4「雨が降りそうだ」and N3's 「今にも〜そうだ」say 'it looks like' from what you see, casually; this one is written-style and formal.
Watch out
- Only for the moment just before a change point (始まる・終わる・沈む・幕が開く・春が来る); not for gradual progress like 少しずつ上手になる — that is 「つつある」.
- If you tell a friend 「今、ご飯を食べようとしている」, that is just N3's 'I'm about to eat' — not this N2 sense.
The long winter is over and spring is about to arrive.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 来る = to come (the point of change) → 意向形: 来よう → we attached 「としている」 → 'it's just about to come' — not anyone's intention; the season is changing by itself.
The final is now about to begin.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 始まる = to begin (in a single moment) → 意向形: 始まろう → 「としています」 (a TV commentator, so ます) → the excitement of 'it's just about to start'.
Just as the sun was about to set, work was finally over.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 沈む = to set (of the sun) → 意向形: 沈もう → 「としている」+ とき = 'the moment it was about to set' → then what happened at that time: やっと仕事が終わった.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which verb form goes before としている?
Volitional + としている: 始まる → 始まろう + としている = is about to begin.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Instant, or gradual?
Only the moment just before a change point works: 終わる・沈む・出発する. 少しずつ上手になる is gradual — say 「上手になりつつある」there.
What does 「さくらが満開になろうとしている」mean?
💡 Hint: Do cherry blossoms have intentions?
The N2 sense: no intention, just the moment before a change —
