Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Shop notices, hospitals, 市役所 paperwork — formal, public language: 「本日に限り、全品2割引」(today only, 20% off everything), 「70歳以上の方に限り、入場無料」.
Meaning
- 「N に限り」= 'only N, as a special case'.
- What follows is the thing that applies only to that exception.
- It can be a perk like a discount or free entry, but also a restriction or a request: 「本日に限り、カードはご利用になれません」「18歳未満の方に限り、保護者の同意書をご提出ください」.
How to attach
- N + に限り (nouns only)
- Without 「に」: 「本日限り」「一回限り」— only on quantity/time words
Versus what you know
- N5Same meaning as 「だけ」, but in a suit.
- N3「〜に限る」= 'is the best' (雨の日は家に限る) — a separate meaning; do not mix them.
- The next two pages, 「に限って」(complaint, defence) and 「に限らず」(not only), are different forms.
Watch out
- It is a word for notices and paperwork — with a friend say 「今日だけ安いよ」, not 「本日に限り」.
- 「女性限り」✗ — a noun that is not a quantity/time word needs 「に」: 「女性に限り」.

Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: Which words can take 「限り」without 「に」?
「N限り」without に works only on quantity/time words — 本日限り・一回限り. A noun like 女性 needs 「に限り」.
「初めてのお客様_、無料でお試しいただけます。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: A shop notice — 'only, as a special case'.
In a public notice, 'only for N' = に限り. に限る means 'is the best' (N3); について and にとって do not fit.
「会員に限り、駐車場は無料です。」— what does it mean?
💡 Hint: に限り = だけ (formal).
に限り = only for: parking is free for members only.
