〜に限って (~ni kagitte) — of all times / of all people
The 'why exactly then!' complaint — 「急いでいるときに限って、バスが来ない」= the bus never comes exactly when I'm in a hurry.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
The spoken, emotional shape — for complaining when bad luck strikes, or for defending someone you trust.
Meaning
- ⓐ 'N, unlike usual': 「
- ⓑ 'why on N of all days!' — the complaint when bad luck strikes: 「急いでいるときに限って、バスが来ない」(the bus never comes exactly when I'm in a hurry)
- ⓒ 'N would never' — defending someone or something you trust: 「
How to attach
- In ⓒ it is usually followed by 〜はずがない・〜わけがない
Versus what you know
- The previous page's 「に限り」= the formal 'only' of notices; 「に限って」is an emotional complaint or defence.
- The next page's 「に限らず」= 'not only' — a different thing.
Also
In speech there is also a critical use: 「初心者に限って偉そうなことを言う」(it's always the beginners who talk big).
It's always on the day I'm in a hurry that the train is late.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 急いでいる日 = a day when I'm in a hurry (N) → 「に限って」 = on exactly that day → then something bad: 電車が遅れる = the train is late (a complaint).
It's usually a quiet shop, but today of all days it's packed.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 今日 = today → 「に限って」 = today, of all days (different from usual) → then something unusual: すごく込んでいる.
Our child, of all people, would never tell a lie.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) うちの子 = our child → 「に限って」 = this one, of all people → then the defense: うそをつくはずがない = there's no way they'd lie.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
— what does 「に限って」express here?
💡 Hint: It ends in はずがない.
Use ⓒ: defending someone you trust — 'our child of all people would never'. 'The best' is N3 に限る.
— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The 'why exactly that day!' complaint.
Use ⓑ, a complaint: it rains exactly on the day I have no umbrella → に限って. について, にわたって and に限る do not fit.
— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Defending someone you trust.
In ⓒ, the defence, 〜はずがない・〜わけがない usually follows: 言うはずがない = would never say.
