〜にわたって (~ni watatte) — over the whole extent of (time / space / field)

Over the whole of a span of time, space or field — 「3日間にわたって」= over three whole days.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N(期間・場所・回数・範囲)+ にわたって/にわたり
    N N(期間・場所・回数・範囲)+ にわたる/にわたった + N

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • You hear it in TV news, weather reports, company reports and on a 履歴書 — formal places.
    • The weather says 「関東地方は広い範囲にわたって大雨となるでしょう」(heavy rain across a wide area of Kanto) — the wide area 'in full'.
    • In a job interview, 「5年間にわたって、コンビニで働いてきました」sounds weighty and serious — 'five years, continuously, the whole stretch'; with a friend, 「5年間働いた」is plenty.

    Meaning

    • 「〜にわたって」= 'over this whole range, not a corner left out'.
    • What follows is usually a verb like 続く・行われる・活躍する — something that kept going or took place.

    How to attach

    • N + にわたって — the N must name something big and wide: time (3日間・長年), place (50キロ・全国・広い範囲), count (数回) or field (多方面・いろいろな分野). That is why a number usually comes first.
    • In more formal writing: 「にわたり」
    • Before a noun: 「にわたる N」(3日間にわたる会議) or 「にわたった N」

    Versus what you know

N3「〜から〜にかけて」(「東京から大阪にかけて雨が降る」) = 'roughly from here to there', with fuzzy edges; 「にわたって」is the opposite — 'the whole of it'.

    Watch out

「10分にわたって」sounds odd — ten minutes is not 'wide'.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    台風の影響で、九州は広い範囲にわたって停電が続いた。

    たいふうのえいきょうで、きゅうしゅうはひろいはんいにわたってていでんがつづいた。

Because of the typhoon, the power stayed out across a wide area of Kyushu.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 広い範囲 = a wide area (a range of space) → since it's an N, we attached 「にわたって」 directly → meaning: across that whole area → then 続いた = it went on.

    私は5年間にわたって、このコンビニで働いてきました。

    わたしはごねんかんにわたって、このコンビニではたらいてきました。

I have worked at this convenience store continuously for five whole years.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 5年間 = five years (number + time) → we attached 「にわたって」: the whole five years, without a break → then 働いてきました = I have been working (the serious tone of an interview).

    3日間にわたる会議がやっと終わった。

    みっかかんにわたるかいぎがやっとおわった。

The meeting that ran over three whole days finally ended.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 3日間 = three days → since 会議 (N) comes after, it takes the form 「にわたる」 → 3日間にわたる会議 = a meeting that ran for three whole days → やっと終わった = finally ended.
