〜を通して (~o tōshite) — through (via) / throughout
By way of something in between, or across a whole period — 「ボランティアを通して友達ができた」= I made friends through volunteering.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- In the mail you send when leaving a job: 「在職期間を通して、大変お世話になりました」(throughout my time here I received great support).
- You hear it both in speech and in writing.
Meaning
- ① Go-between — 'through, by way of': ボランティア活動を通して (through volunteering), インターネットを通して (via the internet)
- ② Time — 'throughout the whole period': 一年を通して = all year round
How to attach
- Always N + を通して
- In writing you sometimes see just 「を通し」
- Before a noun: 「を通しての N」
Versus what you know
- Almost the same meaning as the previous page's 「〜を通じて」— in most places you can swap them.
- 「を通して」has a slightly stronger feel of 'using that medium on purpose'; 「を通じて」is a little more formal.
- N4「で」is for a direct tool (電話で); 「を通して」is for a medium in between.
Watch out
Like 「を通じて」, never on a direct tool — 「はさみを通して切る」✗, 「はさみで切る」.
