〜はもとより (~wa motoyori) — of course… and also (formal)
The formal 「はもちろん」— 「大人はもとより子どもにも」= for adults of course, and for children too.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- In a farewell-party speech, a company presentation or formal writing.
- On your last day at a company: 「部長には仕事のやり方はもとより、日本の習慣もたくさん教えていただきました」(the manager taught me not only how to work, of course, but also a lot about Japanese customs).
Meaning
- 「〜はもとより」= 'this goes without saying, and beyond that this too'.
- The first item is something the speaker treats as obvious, and 「〜も」「〜にも」「〜でも」then adds another example.
- It works in negative sentences too: 「車はもとより自転車もない」(no car, of course, and no bicycle either).
How to attach
- Nouns only: 仕事のやり方はもとより
- With a verb, make it 「〜のはもとより」: サラダで食べるのはもとより
- A particle like で・に can sit between the noun and はもとより: 「教室内ではもとより教室の外でも」
Versus what you know
N3「〜はもちろん…も」(「犬や猫はもちろん、虫も好きです」) — fine for everyday talk; 「はもとより」is its formal version.
Watch out
- It does not attach to a verb or adjective directly.
- Say 「ラーメンはもとより」to a friend over lunch and you sound like you are giving a speech — that is 「はもちろん」territory.

部長には仕事のやり方はもとより、日本の習慣もたくさん教えていただきました。
ぶちょうにはしごとのやりかたはもとより、にほんのしゅうかんもたくさんおしえていただきました。
The manager taught me how to do the job, of course, and a great deal about Japanese customs as well.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 仕事のやり方 = how to do the work (noun) → we attach 「はもとより」 → then 「日本の習慣も」 — "customs too" → 教えていただきました = kindly taught me (humble, polite speech).

このこうじょうでは、さぎょうばではもとより、きゅうけいしつでもあんぜんくつをはかなければならない。

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 作業場 = the work floor → it is a place, so we add 「で」: 作業場で → then 「はもとより」 → then 「休憩室でも」 — "in … too" → はかなければならない = must wear.
