The written 「だけ」— 「関係者のみ」= authorised staff only; on notices, signs and forms.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- At the hospital counter 「お薬のみご希望の方は、こちらへ」, on the factory gate 「関係者のみ入場可」, on a job site 「土日のみのアルバイト」.
- It is the word of notices, signs, forms and announcements.
Meaning
- 「のみ」= 「だけ」(only) — exactly the same meaning, just written and formal.
- With a verb, 「〜のみだ」: 「あとは結果を待つのみだ」(all that is left is to wait for the result) — a slightly literary, resolute tone.
How to attach
- N + のみ: 関係者のみ・郵送のみ
- When a noun follows, 「のみの」: 土日のみのバイト
- Dictionary form + のみ(だ); 「ただ」can go in front: 「ただ待つのみ」.
Versus what you know
- You learned the だけ family in Lesson 4 — remember: 「だけ」when you speak, 「のみ」on paper and notices.
- This lesson's 「のみならず」: 「のみ」= only (limits), 「のみならず」= not only (widens) — exact opposites.
Watch out
Say 「今日はコンビニのみ行く」to a friend and you sound like a signboard — that is 「だけ」territory.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
この入口は関係者のみ利用できます。
このいりぐちはかんけいしゃのみりようできます。
This entrance may be used by authorized staff only.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 関係者 = people concerned (noun) → we attach 「のみ」 directly = only by ~ → then the notice sentence: 利用できます = may be used.
申し込みはメールのみ受け付けます。
もうしこみはメールのみうけつけます。
Applications are accepted by email only.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) メール = email (noun) → 「のみ」 = email only → then 受け付けます = are accepted (form/notice language).
準備はすべてした。あとは結果を待つのみだ。
じゅんびはすべてした。あとはけっかをまつのみだ。
All the preparation is done. Now there is nothing left but to wait for the result.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 待つ = to wait → V辞書形 as it is → we attach 「のみだ」 = all there is to do is wait → a firm, slightly literary feel; 「ただ待つのみだ」 also works.
