    〜をめぐって (~o megutte) — over / surrounding (dispute, debate)

When many people clash over a topic — 「土地をめぐって争う」= to fight over land.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + をめぐって/をめぐり
    N N + をめぐる + N

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • A stiff, formal word you hear in the news, in company meetings or in a family land matter.
    • Think of brothers in Nepal quarrelling over land — 「土地をめぐって争う」is exactly that.

    Meaning

    • 「〜をめぐって」also means 'about', but adds the feeling that many people are fighting, debating or gossiping 'around' that topic.
    • For example: 「残業代の支払いをめぐって、社員と会社が対立している」(employees and the company are at odds over the payment of overtime).

    How to attach

    • N + をめぐって
    • In writing: 「をめぐり」
    • Before a noun: 「をめぐる + N」(土地をめぐる争い)

    Versus what you know

    N3「〜について」and 「〜に関して」= 'about' — calm and neutral; 「をめぐって」carries a sense of dispute.

    Watch out

    • What follows is a verb involving several people — 争う・対立する・議論する・意見が分かれる・うわさが広がる; the people doing it are usually more than one.
    • So 「私はこの問題をめぐって考えた」(I thought about it alone) is wrong — that is 「について」territory.
