〜にかけては (~ni kakete wa) — when it comes to (X is unbeatable)
'When it comes to this, nobody beats them' — 「料理にかけては一番だ」= when it comes to cooking, the best.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Praising someone at work: 「料理にかけては、ラムさんはだれにも負けない」(when it comes to cooking, Ram is unbeatable).
Meaning
- 「〜にかけては」fences off one field — 'whatever else, in this one thing' — and a sentence meaning 'the best' follows.
- 「〜にかけても」means 'number one in this too'.
How to attach
- N + にかけては
- Turn an adjective into a noun with 「さ」: い-adj (速さ・うまさ), な-adj (丁寧さ)
- For a verb: 「〜ことにかけては」
Versus what you know
- N3「〜については」is a neutral 'about'; 「にかけては」carries pride and praise.
- N3It shares its letters with 「〜から〜にかけて」(東京から大阪にかけて = from Tokyo to Osaka), but that one is a range of time or place — a completely different meaning.
Watch out
- It attaches only to words for a skill or ability (料理・演説・足の速さ・漢字を覚えること).
- Only praise follows — 一番だ・だれにも負けない・右に出る者はいない・自信がある — never a bad habit.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
料理の腕にかけては、うちの母はだれにも負けません。
りょうりのうでにかけては、うちのはははだれにもまけません。
When it comes to cooking skill, my mother is unbeatable.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 料理の腕 = cooking skill → we attach 「にかけては」 → then the praise: だれにも負けません.
漢字を覚えることにかけては、クラスで彼が一番だ。
かんじをおぼえることにかけては、クラスでかれがいちばんだ。
When it comes to memorizing kanji, he is the best in the class.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 覚える = to memorize → it is a verb, so we add 「こと」: 覚えること → 「にかけては」 → then 一番だ.
接客の丁寧さにかけては、あの店員の右に出る者はいない。
せっきゃくのていねいさにかけては、あのてんいんのみぎにでるものはいない。
When it comes to polite customer service, nobody beats that clerk.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 丁寧 = polite → add 「さ」 to make a noun: 丁寧さ → 「にかけては」 → then 右に出る者はいない = nobody beats them.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「歌のうま__にかけては、彼がクラスで一番だ。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: にかけては needs a noun before it.
うまい becomes the noun うまさ before にかけては.
In which sentence is 「にかけては」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Praise, or criticism?
にかけては praises a skill; breaking promises is a bad habit, not a skill.
「東京から大阪_の地域で、雨が降るでしょう。」— which fits?
💡 Hint: A range of places, or a skill?
から〜にかけて(の) marks a range of place or time (N3) — 東京から大阪にかけての地域. にかけては marks a field of skill, and 「の」cannot follow it.
