〜にこたえて (~ni kotaete) — in response to (expectation, request)

Doing something so that a hope or request is met — 「期待にこたえて」= living up to expectations.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + にこたえて/にこたえ
    N N + にこたえる + N

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • The manager puts up a notice: 「お客様の声にこたえて、営業時間を延長します」(in response to customers' voices, we are extending our opening hours).
    • On the phone home you say 「親の期待にこたえて、がんばります」.

    Meaning

    • 「〜にこたえて」= doing something so that someone's hope, request or demand is fulfilled.
    • It is not 答える (answering a question) but 応える — living up to what is in someone's heart.

    How to attach

    • Only a limited set of words — 期待・要望・希望・要求・リクエスト・アンコール・声・声援 + にこたえて
    • In writing: 「にこたえ」
    • Before a noun: 「にこたえる + N」(要望にこたえる制度)
    • Polite form: 「ご要望におこたえして」

    Versus what you know

    • N3「〜に対して」only shows direction (客に対して丁寧に = polite towards customers); 「にこたえて」adds 'so as to give them what they wanted'.
    • Do not mix it up with next lesson's 「〜に応じて」(adjusting according to degree).

    Watch out

    • A verb sentence follows (延長する・優勝する・もう一曲歌う).
    • It is never a cause, like 「雨にこたえて」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    お客様の声にこたえて、この店は夜11時まで営業することにした。

    おきゃくさまのこえにこたえて、このみせはよる11じまでえいぎょうすることにした。

In response to customer requests, this shop decided to stay open until 11 p.m.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) お客様の声 = customers' voices/requests → we attach 「にこたえて」 → then the action that meets the request: 営業することにした.

    親の期待にこたえ、彼は日本の大学に合格した。

    おやのきたいにこたえ、かれはにほんのだいがくにごうかくした。

Living up to his parents' expectations, he passed the entrance exam for a Japanese university.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 親の期待 = parents' hopes → written form 「にこたえ」 → then the deed that fulfilled the hope: 合格した.

    社員の要望にこたえる制度を、会社は来月から始める。

    しゃいんのようぼうにこたえるせいどを、かいしゃはらいげつからはじめる。

From next month the company will start a system that meets employees' requests.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 社員の要望 = employees' requests → it comes before a noun (制度), so 「にこたえる」 → 制度 = rule/system → 始める.
