〜をもとに (~o moto ni) — based on (as raw material / source)
Making something new from a source — 「事実をもとに小説を書く」= to write a novel based on facts.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- At work the 店長 says: 「お客様の意見をもとに、新しいメニューを考えてみて」— take the customers' opinions as your base and think up a new menu.
- The opinions are like clay; you make something new out of them.
Meaning
- 「〜をもとに(して)」= take one thing (experience, facts, data, a story, a character) as material and create something new from it.
- So a 'creating' verb usually follows: 作る・書く・デザインする・考え出す・できる.
- For example: 「この映画は本当にあった話をもとに作られた」(this film was made from a true story), 「「花」という漢字をもとにしてロゴをデザインした」.
How to attach
- N + をもとに
- Slightly longer: N + をもとにして
- To modify a noun: N + をもとにした + N (民謡をもとにした歌 = a song made from a folk song)
Versus what you know
- N3「〜によって」is cause or means (地震によって); 「〜をもとに」is not a cause — it is material.
- The next page's 「〜に基づいて」= treat a rule, law or data as the standard and act accordingly; をもとに = use something as raw material to build something new.
- 「事実をもとに小説を書く」is fine, but 「法律をもとに」sounds odd — a law is a standard you follow, so use 基づいて there.
Watch out
- Do not use it for actual physical ingredients — 「小麦粉をもとにパンを作る」✗; say 「小麦粉でパンを作る」.
- をもとに is only for 'thinking' material such as ideas, information and experience.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
この映画は、本当にあった事件をもとに作られた。
このえいがは、ほんとうにあったじけんをもとにつくられた。
This movie was made based on an incident that really happened.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 本当にあった事件 = an incident that really happened (the raw material) → we attach 「をもとに」 → then a "making" verb: 作られた (was made).
お客様の意見をもとにして、新しいメニューを考えました。
おきゃくさまのいけんをもとにして、あたらしいメニューをかんがえました。
Based on the customers' opinions, we came up with a new menu.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) お客様の意見 = customers' opinions → 「をもとにして」 (a slightly longer form) → then something new is born: 新しいメニューを考えました.
自分の経験をもとにした話は、聞く人の心に届く。
じぶんのけいけんをもとにしたはなしは、きくひとのこころにとどく。
A story based on your own experience reaches the listener's heart.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 自分の経験 = your own experience → it has to go before a noun (話), so 「をもとにした」 → 経験をもとにした話 = a story built from experience → then the rest of the sentence.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

In which sentence is 「をもとに」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Physical ingredient, or 'thinking' material?

What is the difference between 「をもとに」and 「に基づいて」?
💡 Hint: Writing a novel, or following a law?
をもとに = use something as material to create; に基づいて = act according to a law, data or policy as the standard.
