〜に基づいて (~ni motozuite) — based on (as standard / rule)
Taking a law, data or rule as the standard — 「法律に基づいて判断する」= to judge according to the law.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
You see this word all the time on 市役所 papers, in company rules and in the news: 「法律に基づいて」「調査結果に基づいて」「契約に基づき」.
Meaning
- Meaning: treat that thing as the yardstick and act without deviating from it.
- For example: 「この工事は市の計画に基づいて進められます」— this construction proceeds according to the city's plan.
- The feeling is firm and formal: 'not arbitrary — there is a basis'.
How to attach
- N + に基づいて
- In writing and notices the short 「N + に基づき」
- Before a noun: 「N + に基づく/基づいた + N」(経験に基づいた判断, 実験結果に基づくトレーニング)
Versus what you know
- N3「〜によって」: 「法律によって決まる」means the law decides (cause / means); with 「〜に基づいて」we act, taking the law as our basis.
- N3「〜とおりに」is the everyday 'just as'; 「に基づいて」is its suited, written version.
- 🔗 Do not mix it up with 「〜をもとに」from the previous page: をもとに = raw material (事実をもとに小説を書く — a novel is 'made' from facts), 基づいて = standard (法律に基づいて判断する — a judgement is 'made according to' the law).
- Quick test: if something new gets created afterwards, をもとに; if a rule is being followed, 基づいて.
Watch out
- The N must be something that can serve as a standard — 法律・データ・計画・方針・調査結果・経験・契約; not feelings like 「気持ちに基づいて」.
- An action verb always follows (判断する・計画を立てる・処理する).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
給料は契約書に基づいて計算されます。
きゅうりょうはけいやくしょにもとづいてけいさんされます。
Salary is calculated based on the contract.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 契約書 = the contract (the standard) → we attach 「に基づいて」 → then the action verb: 計算されます (is calculated).
アンケートの結果に基づき、来月からシフトを変更します。
アンケートのけっかにもとづき、らいげつからシフトをへんこうします。
Based on the survey results, shifts will change from next month.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) アンケートの結果 = the survey results → it's notice language, so the short 「に基づき」 → then the decision: シフトを変更します.
店長は長年の経験に基づいた判断をした。
てんちょうはながねんのけいけんにもとづいたはんだんをした。
The manager made a judgment based on many years of experience.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 長年の経験 = long experience → to put it before a noun (判断), 「に基づいた」 → 経験に基づいた判断 = a judgment based on experience → をした.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「法律_基づいて裁判を行う。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which particle does 基づく take?
N + に + 基づいて. 法律に基づいて = according to the law.
In which sentence is 「に基づいて」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Can the word before it serve as a standard?
に基づいて takes standards like laws, data, rules and plans. A mood is not a standard — say 「気分で店を選んだ」.
「これは事実に_話です。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which form sits right before the noun 話?
Before a noun, 「に基づいた/に基づく + N」: 事実に基づいた話 = a story based on fact. The て-form and 基づき cannot sit right before a noun, and 「基づくの」is wrong.
