Without straying from a line or rule — 「マニュアルに沿って」= following the manual, 「川に沿って」= along the river.

When to use it

At work: 「マニュアルに沿って作業してください」— stay on the manual's line and work alongside it.
In a meeting 「資料に沿ってご説明します」(I will explain following the handout); at a travel agency 「お客様のご希望に沿ったプランを作ります」(a plan in line with your wishes).

Meaning

The core meaning of 「沿う」is 'go alongside': 「川に沿って歩く」= walk along the river.
The same picture at work: there is a path or line, and I do not step off it.
That is why it is followed by an action that continues in sequence — 進める・作業する・説明する・書き進める.

The N is one of two kinds: (1) a real long thing — 川・道・線路, (2) a standard word — 方針・ルール・マニュアル・テーマ・希望・期待

Versus what you know

N3「〜とおりに」— 「説明書のとおりに」means exactly as written; 「〜に沿って」is softer and more formal: 'keeping to that direction'.

えきからかわにそってじゅっぷんほどあるくと、しやくしょがみえます。
