〜のもとで (~no moto de) — under (guidance, influence, conditions)

Under someone's wing or under certain conditions — 「先生のもとで学ぶ」= to study under a teacher.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + のもとで(人・影響)
    N N + のもとに(状況・条件)
    N N + のもとでの + N

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

In farewell speeches you hear it all the time: 「部長のご指導のもとで、いろいろ学ぶことができました」.

    Meaning

    • 「もと」= 下 (under): 「青空のもとで遊ぶ」literally means playing under a blue sky.
    • The same picture with people: 「先輩のもとで仕事を覚えた」— under a senior's wing, receiving their influence and guidance, I learned the job.
    • The feeling: doing something under the protection or influence of someone bigger or stronger — in Nepali, 'under the guru', 'in a parent's lap'.

    How to attach

    • 「〜のもとで」mostly attaches to people (先生・両親・監督・祖母) — 'under that person's influence'; an action verb follows: 働く・学ぶ・暮らす・練習に励む
    • 「〜のもとに」attaches to nouns for a situation (協力・了解・管理・条件・〜という名) — 'under that condition'; an action or a state can follow: 「住民の了解のもとに続いている」(it continues with the residents' consent)
    • The 'in the name of' use is very common in the news: 「開発という名のもとに自然が失われる」(nature is lost in the name of development)
    • Always N + の + もとで/もとに; in writing just 「もと」(ご指導のもと)
    • Before a noun: 「〜のもとでの + N」(監督のもとでの練習)

    Versus what you know

    • N3「〜において」is place or time (東京において); 「〜のもとで」is not a place — it is 'under whose influence / what conditions'.
    • 「〜と一緒に」puts you side by side; 「〜のもとで」has a top and bottom — the teacher above, you learning below.

    Also

On paper it is written 下 and read もと — do not be thrown by 「指導の下で」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    先輩のもとで、一年間しっかり技術を学びました。

    せんぱいのもとで、いちねんかんしっかりぎじゅつをまなびました。

Under my senior, I learned the skills properly for a year.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 先輩 = senior (a person) → we add 「の」 → it's a person, so 「もとで」 → then the action verb: 技術を学びました.

    このイベントは、市役所の協力のもとに毎年行われている。

    このイベントは、しやくしょのきょうりょくのもとにまいとしおこなわれている。

This event is held every year with the cooperation of city hall.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 協力 = cooperation (a condition, not a person) → 「の」 → it's a condition, so 「もとに」 → then the ongoing state: 行われている.

    子どものころは、青空のもとで一日中遊んでいた。

    こどものころは、あおぞらのもとでいちにちじゅうあそんでいた。

As a child I used to play all day under the blue sky.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 青空 = blue sky → 「の」 → we are literally under it, so 「もとで」 → then the action: 遊んでいた.
