〜をきっかけに (~o kikkake ni) — taking ~ as the trigger
'That event is where something began' — 「アニメをきっかけに日本語を始めた」= anime got me started on Japanese.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
When someone asks why you came to Japan: 「アニメをきっかけに、日本語を勉強し始めました」— anime is where it started; I began studying Japanese.
Meaning
- 「きっかけ」is the 'starting point': an event happened, and from there something new began or life changed direction.
- 「病気をきっかけにお酒をやめた」(after getting ill I quit drinking, from then on), 「転勤をきっかけに一人暮らしを始めた」.
- The feeling: the event may be small, but something changed after it — Nepali 'from that occasion'.
How to attach
- N + をきっかけに(して)
- A bit more conversational: 「N がきっかけで」('this was the trigger')
- Asked the other way round: 「〜たきっかけは N です」(日本に来たきっかけは友達の話です)
- With a verb: 「V るの/V たの + をきっかけに」
Versus what you know
- N3「〜ため(に)」and 「〜せいで」are direct causes; きっかけ is not a cause, it is a door — anime did not teach you Japanese, but anime opened the door.
- The next page's 「〜を契機に」is the hard, formal version with the same meaning — for big social events.

💡 Hint: Asked the other way round: 'what was the starting point?'
「〜たきっかけは N です」= the trigger for ~ was N. 日本に来たきっかけ = what started me coming to Japan.
「アニメ_日本に興味を持った。」— to say anime was the door that started the interest?
💡 Hint: Not a direct cause — a starting point.
きっかけ = the starting point. にこたえて is for meeting a request, に基づいて for a standard, のもとで for being under an influence — none fits here.
