    〜のみならず (~nominarazu) — not only… (formal)

The written 「だけでなく」— 「日本のみならず海外でも」= not only in Japan but abroad too.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + のみならず
    Verb V普通形 + のみならず
    い-adj い-adj + のみならず
    な-adj な-adj [だ] + である + のみならず
    N N + である + のみならず

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • It is the word of the news, newspapers, company reports, 市役所 notices and presentations.
    • In the news: 「電気代のみならず、ガス代や水道代も値上がりする」(not only electricity but gas and water bills are going up too).

    Meaning

    • 「〜のみならず」= 'not only this, but others too' — the same as 「だけでなく」, just written and formal.
    • The second clause usually carries 「も」— the 'also' feeling.

    How to attach

    • A noun directly: 日本のみならず
    • Verbs and い-adjectives in plain form: 止まったのみならず・速いのみならず
    • な-adjectives and nouns with 「である」: 便利であるのみならず — 「便利なのみならず」is not used
    • In writing you also see 「ただ〜のみならず」「ひとり〜のみならず」.

    Versus what you know

    • N3「〜だけでなく…も」and 「〜ばかりでなく」(「子供だけでなく大人も」) — with friends that is all you need.
    • Lesson 4's 「〜に限らず」widens the range (休日に限らず一年中 — not just holidays, all year round), while 「のみならず」also works when you add another item of the same level (与党のみならず野党も — not only the ruling party but the opposition too).

    Watch out

Say 「安いのみならずおいしいよ」to a friend and it sounds odd — that is 「だけじゃなくて」territory.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    この店は日本人のみならず、外国人にも人気がある。

    このみせはにほんじんのみならず、がいこくじんにもにんきがある。

This shop is popular not only with Japanese people but with foreigners too.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 日本人 = Japanese people (noun) → it is an N, so we attach 「のみならず」 directly → then 「外国人にも」 — 「も」 says "too" → 人気がある = is popular.

    彼は仕事が速いのみならず、ミスも少ない。

    かれはしごとがはやいのみならず、ミスもすくない。

He is not only fast at his work, he also makes few mistakes.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 速い = fast (い-adj) → the plain form as it is: 速いのみならず → then 「ミスも」 — "mistakes too" → 少ない = few.

    台風で電車が止まったのみならず、バスも動かなかった。

    たいふうででんしゃがとまったのみならず、バスもうごかなかった。

Because of the typhoon, not only did the trains stop, the buses did not run either.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 止まる = to stop → it already happened, so the た-form: 止まった → attach 「のみならず」 directly → then 「バスも」 — "the buses too" → 動かなかった = did not run.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「この問題は経済的な問題である__、政治的な問題でもある。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: 'Not only this but that too' — the written form.
