How 「〜に関して調べる」becomes 「〜に関する調査」— the three rules for putting every form in this lesson in front of a noun.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
In work email, notices and the news, instead of 「事故の原因に関して調べる」the idea is written short, as a noun phrase: 「事故の原因に関する調査」(an investigation into the cause of the accident).
Meaning
- The forms of this lesson (をめぐって・にこたえて・をもとに・に基づいて・に沿って・のもとで) and the N3 ones に関して・に対して・にとって usually come before a verb.
- There are three ways to put them in front of a noun — just as in Nepali we add 'को' to say 'Y about X'.
How to attach
- ① The 「の」group: add 「の」straight after the particle — にとっての・からの・までの・での・との・にあたっての・に際しての・のもとでの・を通じての・としての
- ① For example: 「留学生にとって大きい問題」→「留学生にとっての大きい問題」
- ② Forms built from a verb: no の — put the verb in dictionary or た-form directly before the noun.
- ② Dictionary-form group: に関する・に対する・に伴う・をめぐる・にわたる・に基づく・に沿う・による・における・をはじめとする・にこたえる (目上の人に対する礼儀, 5年にわたる工事, 土地をめぐる争い)
- ② た-form group: に沿った・に基づいた・をもとにした・に応じた (経験に基づいた判断, 希望に沿ったプラン). Both 基づく/基づいた and 沿う/沿った work.
- ③ 「という/との」for content: before 'content-carrying' nouns like 知らせ・うわさ・手紙・ニュース・評判・話, put the clause in plain form and add 「という」(spoken) or 「との」(written / news)
- ③ For example: 「兄が結婚するという知らせ」「時給が上がるとの連絡」
Versus what you know
N3You already learned 「〜との・での N」— ① is the extension of that.
Watch out
- 「に」cannot take 「の」— 「母にの贈り物」✗, 「母への贈り物」.
- The て-form (に関して, に対して) never sits right before a noun.
- In ③, if there is also a word like 「うれしい」「その」「変な」, it goes right next to the noun — 「兄が結婚するという うれしい手紙」, 「おばけが出るという 変なうわさ」.
Also
Easy memory: particle-like (にとって・として・から) → の; verb-like (関する・対する・沿う) → dictionary / た-form; a whole clause → という/との.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
留学生にとっての一番の心配は、やはりお金だ。
りゅうがくせいにとってのいちばんのしんぱいは、やはりおかねだ。
For international students, the biggest worry is, after all, money.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 留学生にとって = for international students → it has to go before a noun (心配) → it works like a particle, so we add 「の」: にとっての → 留学生にとっての心配.
アルバイトに関する相談は、店長にしてください。
アルバイトにかんするそうだんは、てんちょうにしてください。
For questions about the part-time job, please talk to the manager.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) アルバイトに関して = about the part-time job → the て-form can't go before a noun (相談) → use the verb's 辞書形: に関する → アルバイトに関する相談.
来月から時給が上がるという知らせを聞いて、うれしかった。
らいげつからじきゅうがあがるというしらせをきいて、うれしかった。
I was happy to hear the news that the hourly wage is going up from next month.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 時給が上がる = the hourly wage goes up (a full clause, 普通形) → 知らせ is a noun that "carries content", so 「という」 → 上がるという知らせ → then the rest of the sentence.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「これは母_贈り物です。」— 'a present for my mother': fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 「に」cannot take 「の」.
母にあげる贈り物 → 母への贈り物. 「にの」is wrong — use へ instead of に, then add の.
Which noun-modifying form is wrong?
💡 Hint: Can a て-form sit right before a noun?
に関して (て-form) cannot modify a noun directly → use the dictionary form 「事故原因に関する調査」.
「兄が結婚する_手紙が届いた。」— 'a letter saying my brother is getting married'?
💡 Hint: It gives the letter's content.
To give the content of nouns like 手紙・知らせ・うわさ, use plain form + という/との. 結婚するとの手紙 = a letter saying he is getting married.
