〜につけ〜につけ (~ni tsuke ~ni tsuke) — whether … or … (always)
Two opposite things paired to say 'whichever it is, always' — 「いいにつけ悪いにつけ」= whether good or bad.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
You hear it when people talk about life, in essays and speeches: 「いいにつけ悪いにつけ、子は親に似る」(for better or worse, children take after their parents).
Meaning
- 「AにつけBにつけ」= 'whether A or B, always' — 「いいにつけ悪いにつけ」「暑いにつけ寒いにつけ」.
- A and B are a natural pair (いい・悪い, うれしい・悲しい, 見る・聞く); after them comes something true either way.
How to attach
- An い-adjective attaches directly: いい + につけ, 悪い + につけ
- A verb takes dictionary form + につけ: 見るにつけ聞くにつけ
Versus what you know
- The single 「〜につけ」(写真を見るにつけ思い出す) = 'whenever I see it, a feeling rises' — it needs a feeling after it.
- The pair 「AにつけBにつけ」= 'whether A or B' — here what follows need not be a feeling.
- N3「〜たびに」never forms this pair — you cannot say 「いいたびに悪いたびに」.
Watch out
If A and B are not a pair, the 'whether … or' meaning never forms — 「大きいにつけ高いにつけ」❌.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
いいにつけ悪いにつけ、日本での生活は私を強くしてくれた。
いいにつけわるいにつけ、にほんでのせいかつはわたしをつよくしてくれた。
For better or worse, life in Japan has made me stronger.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) いい・悪い = good・bad (い-adj) → 「につけ」 directly on both → "whichever it is" → then something that is always true.
うれしいにつけ悲しいにつけ、まず母に電話してしまう。
うれしいにつけかなしいにつけ、まずははにでんわしてしまう。
Happy or sad, the first thing I do is call my mother.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) うれしい・悲しい = happy・sad (an opposite pair) → 「につけ」 directly on both → "whatever happens" → then what I always do: まず母に電話してしまう.
テレビで見るにつけ人から聞くにつけ、日本の物価が上がっていると感じる。
テレビでみるにつけじんからきくにつけ、にほんのぶっかがあがっているとかんじる。
Whether I see it on TV or hear it from people, I feel prices in Japan are going up.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 見る・聞く = to see・to hear (a pair that goes together) → V辞書形 + 「につけ」 on both → "whether I see it or hear it" → then: 物価が上がっていると感じる (I feel prices are rising).
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
'Whether good or bad' — which is correct?
💡 Hint: The AにつけBにつけ pattern.
「いいにつけ悪いにつけ」= whether good or bad, always. たびに does not form this pair.
「うれしい_悲しい_、この歌を聞きたくなる。」— what fills both blanks?
💡 Hint: 'Happy or sad' — which attaches straight to an い-adjective?
い-adj + につけ on both sides: うれしいにつけ悲しいにつけ = happy or sad. The other three do not attach to an い-adjective like this.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Do A and B form a natural pair?
A and B must be a natural pair (いい・悪い, うれしい・悲しい, 見る・聞く); 大きい and 高い are not, so the 'whether … or' meaning never forms.
