〜に反して (~ni hanshite) — contrary to (an expectation, a rule)

The exact opposite of what was predicted, hoped or ruled — the formal word that goes with 予想・期待・規則.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + に反して/に反し
    N N + に反する/に反した + N

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Before the 面接 (interview) you thought 'this will be really hard', but it turned out easy — 「予想に反して、面接は簡単だった」.
    • It is formal and written — news, reports, company writing.

    Meaning

    • 「〜に反して」(にはんして) = 'the exact opposite of that'.
    • What comes before is almost always 予想・期待・意向・意志・希望 (what was predicted, hoped, wanted) or 規則・精神 (a rule, a principle).
    • In the rule sense 「〜に反する」also means 'to break' the rule: 「フェアプレイの精神に反する行為」.
    • What follows is usually a disappointing or surprising result (売れなかった・効果がなかった・がっかりした), but a good one is possible too — 「予想に反して景気は回復した」.

    How to attach

    • Noun bare + に反して: 「期待に反して」
    • Short written form: 「期待に反し」
    • Before a noun: 「に反する N」/「に反した N」— 「規則に反する行為」(an act against the rules), 「予想に反した結果」

    Versus what you know

    • N4「〜のに」(頑張ったのに落ちた) also carries 'not as expected', but it is conversational; に反して is formal and written.
    • N3Contrasting two people or things is the job of 「〜と違って」or「〜に対して」.

    Watch out

Not with just any noun — to contrast people, 「兄に反して弟は…」is wrong.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    予想に反して、面接はとても簡単だった。

    よそうにはんして、めんせつはとてもかんたんだった。

Contrary to what I expected, the interview was very easy.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 予想 = expectation, what I thought → N as it is + 「に反して」 → then a result exactly opposite to what I thought: 簡単だった.

    親の期待に反し、彼は大学をやめて日本で働き始めた。

    おやのきたいにはんし、かれはだいがくをやめてにほんではたらきはじめた。

Against his parents' hopes, he quit university and started working in Japan.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 期待 = hope → 「に反し」 (the short written form) → then what happened against the hope: 大学をやめた.

    会社の規則に反する行為は、絶対にしてはいけません。

    かいしゃのきそくにはんするこういは、ぜったいにしてはいけません。

You must never do anything that goes against company rules.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 規則 = rule → it has to go before a noun (行為), so 「に反する」 → 規則に反する行為 = an act that breaks the rules → then the prohibition.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「専門家の予想_反して、円が安くなった。」— fill the blank.
