〜やら〜やら (~yara ~yara) — A and B and so on (chaotic, overwhelmed)
The list that adds an 'ugh, so much at once' feeling to 「〜や〜など」.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Think of moving day: boxes to carry, the room to clean, a new address to file at the 市役所, and no idea what to do first.
- For that 'too many things at once, my head is spinning' moment Japanese says 「引っ越しの日は荷物を運ぶやら掃除をするやらで、一日中休む暇がなかった」(what with carrying stuff and cleaning, I had no break all day).
Meaning
- 「〜やら〜やら」= a list of examples that adds the speaker's feeling: there is so much it cannot be sorted out, it was hard, or it was a surprise.
- That is why it also works for two feelings mixed together — holding your first pay: 「うれしいやら信じられないやら」(happy and yet unable to believe it).
- It also works when you cannot tell which reason it really is: 腹が立つやら情けないやらで = anger or shame, I cannot say.
- What follows is usually a 'hard / full' sentence: 「〜で大変だ」「〜でいっぱいだ」「複雑な気持ちだ」.
How to attach
- N, dictionary-form verb or い-adjective plus 「やら」— 家賃やら携帯代やら, 泣くやら笑うやら, かゆいやら痛いやら
- Both pieces must belong to the same group (both costs, both feelings, both chores).
Versus what you know
- N4「〜や〜など」is a calm list — it just says 'there is this and this'.
- N3「〜とか〜とか」「〜たり〜たり」are calm lists too.
- 「〜やら〜やら」adds the speaker's feeling (overwhelmed, hard, surprised).
Watch out
- For a calm, formal list (who attends the meeting, what a form needs) this is wrong — write 「や」.
- 「やら」there makes the reader think you are fed up.
Also
You will also hear 「何やら」, meaning 'something, not sure what' (何やら話している = they are talking about something).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
引っ越しの日は荷物を運ぶやら掃除をするやらで、一日中休む暇がなかった。
ひっこしのひはにもつをはこぶやらそうじをするやらで、いちにちじゅうやすむひまがなかった。
On moving day, what with carrying boxes and cleaning and all, I had no time to rest all day.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 運ぶ = to carry, する = to do → both V辞書形, both in the "tasks" group → attach 「やら」 to each → 「で」 says "because of all that" → then the sentence about how hard it was: 休む暇がなかった.
日本に来たばかりのころは家賃やら携帯代やらで、お金がどんどん出ていった。
にほんにきたばかりのころはやちんやらけいたいだいやらで、おかねがどんどんでていった。
When I first came to Japan, what with rent and the phone bill and everything, money just kept flowing out.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 家賃 = rent, 携帯代 = phone bill → both N, both "expenses" → add 「やら」 to each as they are → 「で」 → then the result "it was a lot": お金がどんどん出ていった.
初めての給料をもらって、うれしいやら信じられないやら、不思議な気持ちだった。
はじめてのきゅうりょうをもらって、うれしいやらしんじられないやら、ふしぎなきもちだった。
When I got my first paycheck, I was happy and couldn't believe it at the same time — a strange feeling.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) うれしい = happy (い-adj), 信じられない = can't believe it → both in the "feelings" group → 「やら」「やら」 → you can't say exactly which feeling it is → then: 不思議な気持ちだった.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「初めて日本語で面接を受けて、緊張する_不安になる_、頭が真っ白になった。」— fill the blanks.
💡 Hint: Feelings mixed up, head spinning — which list?
V辞書形 + やら + V辞書形 + やら. 'Nervous and anxious and who knows what' — the emotional list is 「やら」; 「や」cannot join verbs.
In which sentence is 「やら」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A calm formal notice, or an overwhelmed feeling?
A plain notice of who attends has no feeling — say 「部長や課長が」. 「やら」adds 'too many, chaotic, fed up'.
What does 「〜やら〜やら」add that 「〜や〜など」does not?
💡 Hint: Think of the feeling 'so many things, I cannot sort them out'.
やら gives examples with the feeling 'so much, cannot sort it out, hard / surprising'. 「や」is just a plain list.
