〜にしろ〜にしろ (~ni shiro ~ni shiro) — whether A or B, the same holds
Put two examples or an opposite pair and say 'whichever it is, the same applies'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- The 店長 talking about shifts: 「出勤するにしろ休むにしろ、前の日までに連絡してください」— whether you come in or take the day off, tell me by the day before.
- It is the tone of work, notices and advice — strong and slightly formal.
Meaning
- 「〜にしろ〜にしろ」= two cases set side by side to say 'whichever it is, what you must do is the same' — 'take this, take that, take anything in the group: the result is the same'.
- Pattern 1: two examples from the same group — 「野菜にしろ魚にしろ、新鮮さが第一だ」(vegetables or fish, freshness comes first; and for every other ingredient too).
- Pattern 2: an opposite pair — 行く/行かない, 好き/嫌い, 出席する/欠席する, いい/悪い.
- What follows is mostly the speaker's judgement or a request — 〜てください・〜たほうがいい・〜必要がある・〜べきだ.
How to attach
- N, dictionary or ない-form verb, い-adjective — all attach directly + にしろ
- な-adjectives and nouns drop 「だ」: 便利にしろ・学生にしろ (the 「である」form also exists)
- Three levels: 「にしても〜にしても」is the softest and most conversational; 「にしろ〜にしろ」is in the middle; 「にせよ〜にせよ」is the stiffest — for speeches and written notices.
Versus what you know
- N3「〜も…ば〜も」(勉強もできればスポーツもできる) only piles up qualities, 'this too and that too'.
- 「〜ても〜ても」(行っても行かなくても) is close in meaning, but にしろ has the stronger, slightly formal tone of 'take anything, the result is the same'.
Watch out
Both pieces must be the same kind of thing; do not join unrelated ideas like 「行くにしろ天気がいいにしろ」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
出勤するにしろ休むにしろ、前の日までに店長に連絡してください。
しゅっきんするにしろやすむにしろ、まえのひまでにてんちょうにれんらくしてください。
Whether you are coming in or taking the day off, let the manager know by the day before.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 出勤する = to come in to work, 休む = to take the day off → an opposite pair, both V辞書形 → add 「にしろ」「にしろ」 to them as they are → then the request: 連絡してください.
日本語にしても英語にしても、言葉は毎日使わなければ上手にならない。
にほんごにしてもえいごにしても、ことばはまいにちつかわなければじょうずにならない。
Whether it's Japanese or English, a language won't improve unless you use it every day.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 日本語, 英語 = two examples from the "language" group → they are N, so add 「にしても」 (the softer form) to them as they are → then the speaker's judgment: 使わなければ上手にならない — the same for any language.
東京に残るにせよ国へ帰るにせよ、ビザの手続きは早めに調べておく必要がある。
とうきょうにのこるにせよくにへかえるにせよ、ビザのてつづきははやめにしらべておくひつようがある。
Whether you stay in Tokyo or go back home, you need to look into the visa procedures early.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 残る = to stay, 帰る = to go back → an opposite pair → the stiff form 「にせよ」「にせよ」 (formal advice) → then: 必要がある.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「便利_不便_、住む所は自分で決めることだ。」— fill the blanks.
💡 Hint: What happens to だ after a な-adjective?
な-adjectives and nouns drop だ and take にしろ directly: 便利にしろ不便にしろ.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: The two pieces must be the same group or an opposite pair.
「行く」and 「天気がいい」are neither the same group nor opposites — only same-group examples or an opposite pair can go here.
Which of the three is the stiffest, used in written notices and speeches?
💡 Hint: Which one sounds 'a little stiff'?
にせよ is the stiffest; にしろ in between; にしても soft; にしたって is spoken only.
