〜次第だ (~shidai da) — depends on / depending on / that is how it came about
After a noun 次第 = 'it depends on this'; after a verb 次第です = the polite business 'that is why'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Picture the 店長 saying 「時給が上がるかどうかは、君の働き次第だ」— whether your pay goes up depends on your work.
Meaning
- After a noun, 「次第」= 'it depends on this'. There are three shapes:
- ① 「N次第だ」at the end of a sentence: 「人生が楽しいかどうかは考え方次第だ」.
- ② 「N次第で…」mid-sentence — what follows changes or is decided according to N: 「天気次第で花火大会は中止になる場合もある」.
- 「次第では」picks out just one of several possibilities, so 「〜かもしれない」「〜場合もある」follows — 「言い方次第では、断られるかもしれませんよ」.
- ③ 「Vる/Vた/Vている + 次第です」is a different animal: the polite business explanation 'that is how this came about' (=〜わけです).
- Visiting a client after taking over: 「担当が替わりましたので、ごあいさつに伺った次第です」.
How to attach
- ①② Noun bare + 次第だ/次第で/次第では
- ③ Plain verb (Vる/Vた/Vている) + 次第です
Versus what you know
- N3You already met 「次第」in one meaning — 「決まり次第、ご連絡します」= 'as soon as it is decided', attached to the ます-stem (決まり).
- Now the same 次第 after a noun changes meaning: 'it depends on this'.
Watch out
- In ①② the word before 次第 must be something that can vary (天気・予算・本人・考え方・結果), never something fixed.
- What follows must show a result that shifts accordingly — 決まる・変わる・増えたり減ったりする — so a certainty like 「結果次第では必ず合格する」is wrong.
- The N3 「Vます次第」cannot describe the past (「戻り次第電話した」is wrong).
- 「次第に」(gradually) is a different word — don't mix them up.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
日本で成功するかどうかは、あなたの努力次第だ。
にほんでせいこうするかどうかは、あなたのどりょくしだいだ。
Whether you succeed in Japan depends on your effort.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 努力 = effort (can be more or less) → N as it is + 「次第だ」 → placed at the end of the sentence → "success depends on effort".
天気次第では、明日の運動会は中止になるかもしれません。
てんきしだいでは、あしたのうんどうかいはちゅうしになるかもしれません。
Depending on the weather, tomorrow's sports day might be canceled.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 天気 = weather → we attach 「次第では」 (one of several possibilities) → so 「〜かもしれません」 follows: it might be canceled.
担当が替わりましたので、ごあいさつに伺った次第です。
たんとうがかわりましたので、ごあいさつにうかがったしだいです。
As the person in charge has changed, I have come to introduce myself.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 伺う = to go/visit (humble) → Vた: 伺った → we attach 「次第です」 → "this is why I have come" — a polite business explanation (=伺ったわけです).
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「合格できるかどうかは、本人の努力_だ。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 'depends on' — attaches bare to the noun.
N + 次第だ = depends on. 次第に means 'gradually' (a different word).
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: After 次第では: a certainty, or one possibility?
After 次第では comes one possibility among several (〜かもしれない・〜場合もある); it clashes with 「必ず」.
Which 次第 means 'as soon as' (the N3 meaning)?
💡 Hint: Which one is on a ます-stem?
決まり次第 = as soon as it is decided (ます-stem). N次第で = depending on; V次第です = that is why.
