    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

Sitting in a restaurant with a friend: 「この店、雰囲気はともかく、味は最高だよ」— whatever the atmosphere is like, the food is superb.

    Meaning

    • 「〜はともかく」= 'good or bad, let us leave A for now; what I want to say is B'.
    • A matters less, B gets the stress — what follows is always the thing you want to stress more than A.
    • Nothing is said about A (it may be good, it may not); only B is certain.

    How to attach

    • N(+particle) + はともかく (外ではともかく)
    • A clause takes plain present + の + はともかく (読むのはともかく)
    • 「〜かどうか」and「question word + か」also attach: 「受験するかどうかはともかく」
    • Adding 「として」(「はともかくとして」) makes it a little longer and more formal.

    Versus what you know

    • N3With 「〜はもちろん〜も」both A and B are fine; with 「はともかく」nothing is said about A, only B is certain.
    • Do not mix it up with 「を問わず」: 「年齢を問わず」= applies equally to every age; 「年齢はともかく」= leave age aside, look at something else.
    • 「〜はさておき」is also 'setting aside', but it drops the current topic to move to the main point — it has its own page.

    Watch out

To say 'A and B are both bad' use 「はもちろん〜も」— 「Bも」does not follow はともかく.

This apartment — never mind the size — is handy because it is close to the station.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 広さ = size (good or bad — let's leave that for now) → 「はともかく」 → then the point being stressed: 駅から近い.

    合格するかどうかはともかく、まずは申し込んでみよう。

    ごうかくするかどうかはともかく、まずはもうしこんでみよう。

Never mind whether we pass or not — let's just apply first.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 合格するかどうか = whether we pass or not → 「はともかく」 = let's think about that later → then what to do now: 申し込んでみよう.

    日本語の上手下手はともかくとして、まず話してみることが大切だ。

    にほんごのじょうずへたはともかくとして、まずはなしてみることがたいせつだ。

Never mind whether your Japanese is good or bad — what matters is to try speaking first.
