    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    Meaning

    • For a soft denial — "not much, not especially" — use 「たいして〜ない」or 「別に〜ない」.
    • 「たいして」is about degree: 「たいして難しくない」= not that hard.
    • 「別に」means "nothing in particular": 「別に急いでいない」= I'm not in any particular hurry.

    How to attach

Both たいして and 別に take a negative.

    Versus what you know

N3They are far softer than 「少しも〜ない」.

    Watch out

Answering 「どうしたの?」with just 「別に」means "nothing" — but it can sound curt, so be careful.

    「どうしたの?」「べつに、なんでもない。」

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 別に as the answer to a question → 何でもない comes after → an answer meaning 'nothing in particular'.
