    〜さ・〜み (~sa / ~mi) — -ness

Two suffixes that turn an adjective into a noun — one measures, one feels.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    い-adj い-adj [い] + さ
    い-adj い-adj [い] + み
    な-adj な-adj [だ] + さ

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    Meaning

    • N3 adds 「〜み」— it marks a felt, subjective quality and works with only a limited set: 楽しみ (enjoyment, anticipation), 悲しみ (sadness), 重み (a sense of weight), 甘み (a sweet taste).
    • Compare: 重さ = how many kilos; 重み = the feeling of heaviness.

    How to attach

「楽しみにしています」= I'm looking forward to it — an everyday sentence.

    Versus what you know

    • N4You learned 「〜さ」at N4 — it turns an adjective into a noun: 高い → 高さ (height), 大切 → 大切さ (importance).
    • N4さ marks a measurable, objective quality and works with almost any adjective.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    このしごとのたいへんさは、やったひとしかわからない。

    国に帰るのを楽しみにしています。

    くににかえるのをたのしみにしています。

I'm looking forward to going home.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 楽しい → drop い and attach み → 楽しみ = joy you feel → 楽しみにしている = looking forward to it.

    この言葉には、重みがある。

    このことばには、おもみがある。

    These words carry weight.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 重い → drop い, add み → 重み = a felt sense of weight (not 重さ, which is weight in kilos).
