〜べきだ・べきではない (~beki da / beki de wa nai) — should / shouldn't
"This is the right thing" — what one ought to do, morally or logically.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
「〜べきだ」states what one ought to do, morally or logically: 「体調が悪い時は、休むべきだ」= when you're unwell, you should rest.
How to attach
- The negative is 「〜べきではない」: 「無理すべきではない」= you shouldn't push yourself.
- One quirk of form — with する, both 「すべき」and 「するべき」are fine.
Versus what you know
N4「〜ほうがいい」is soft advice; べきだ is a firm view that this is the right thing, so saying 「〜べきです」straight to a superior can sound harsh.
Watch out
For what rules or law require, use 「〜なければならない」, not べきだ.
