Passing on what you heard, and spelling out what something means.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
- At N3, adding だ to 「〜ということ」gives 「〜ということだ」, which does two jobs.
- First, hearsay: 「台風で、明日は休みということだ」= I hear tomorrow is off because of the typhoon.
- Like 「〜そうだ」, but more formal.
- Second, spelling out meaning: 「返事がない。つまり、断るということだ」= no reply — in other words, that means no.
How to attach
「〜とのことだ」is the still more formal hearsay form, used in work email and messages: 「田中さんは、今日お休みとのことです」.
Versus what you know
N4「〜ということ」turned a sentence into a noun.
