    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

It is written and fairly formal; in speech you would say 「残念だけど、〜」.

    Meaning

「〜ことに」puts your feeling before the event you report: 「残念なことに、試験に落ちた」= sadly, I failed the exam.

    How to attach

    • An adjective or verb of feeling comes first — 残念な, うれしい, 驚いた, 困った, ありがたい.
    • な-adjectives take な, い-adjectives attach directly, verbs use the た-form.
    • A comma always follows 「〜ことに」and the sentence continues.
