〜ては (~te wa) — if ~, that's bad
Do that and something bad follows — a warning condition.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
「〜ては」warns that doing something leads to a bad result: 「毎日コンビニ弁当を食べては、体に悪い」= eating convenience-store lunches every day is bad for you.
How to attach
- Add は to the て-form; if it ends in で it becomes では (飲んでは).
- Nouns and な-adjectives take 「〜では」.
- In casual speech it contracts to 「〜ちゃ/じゃ」: 「食べちゃだめ」= you mustn't eat it.
Watch out
A bad result or a prohibition always follows, so it never appears with something positive.
