Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
When something has not happened but you want to think it through, use 「〜としたら」or 「〜とすれば」: 「N2に受かったとしたら、仕事のビザに変えられる」= supposing I passed N2, I could switch to a work visa.
How to attach
- It attaches to the plain form, with だ kept for な-adjectives and nouns.
- What follows is usually your view, a guess or a question — 「どうしますか」, 「〜でしょう」.
- 「〜とすると」belongs to the same family.
Versus what you know
N4Compared with plain 「〜たら」it carries more of a "let's suppose" flavour, which makes it useful in discussion and planning.
