Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

N / V plain form + の what you noticed
marks the thing
気が つきます notice it

Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

「〜に 気が つきます」means to notice or realise something. The thing noticed is marked with に — 間違いに 気が つきました. With a whole sentence, の makes it a noun and you get のに — 財布が ないのに 気が つきました. This のに is not the のに that means "although"; it is just の + に. **気が つきます and 気を つけます are different** — the first is "to notice", the second is "to be careful". Noticing happens in one moment, so 気が つきました is the usual form.
