〜はずが ありません / 〜はずでした (~hazu ga arimasen / ~hazu deshita) — Cannot possibly be / was supposed to be

「はずが ありません」says "there is no way that happens" — a strong denial. It attaches exactly like 「はずです」: straight onto the plain form (普通形), な for a な-adjective, の for a noun. With friends it becomes 「はずが ない」, and a softer 「はずは ありません」is also heard. **Big trap:** you do not build it as 「はずじゃない」— that does not work for this meaning. And 「〜ない はずです」is not the same as 「〜はずが ありません」: 「田中さんは 来ない はずです」= I have grounds, so I expect he will not come; 「田中さんが 来る はずが ありません」= there is no way he comes. One more form, 「はずでした」: it was supposed to happen but did not — 3時に 着く はずでしたが、電車が 遅れました. Which to pick? For the plain expectation "he probably will not come", use 「〜ない はずです」; to say "impossible", use 「はずが ありません」.
