尊敬語 has two regular routes, and both start from the ます form. **First — れます／られます.** This is the same shape as the passive (受身形), but here it does not mean "it was done to me", it means "you/he/she did it": 書きます → 書かれます, 出かけます → 出かけられます, します → されます, 来ます → 来られます. Because the shape is shared, it can be confused with the passive and the potential — tell them apart by who is doing the action. **Second — お + the ます stem + に なります.** This sounds more respectful than the first: 書きます → お書きに なります, 出かけます → お出かけに なります. **Trap:** it does not work when only one syllable is left after dropping ます — × お見に なります, × お寝に なります. It also does not work for 来ます and します; words built on 〜します take ご instead — ご説明に なります.
