Here それ does not point at an object you can touch — it points at **what the other person just said**. は makes that the topic of your sentence, and your reaction follows. The ones you hear again and again: それは いけませんね (that is no good), それは 大変ですね (that must be hard), それは よかったですね (that is good to hear), それは 困りましたね (that is awkward). ね usually closes it, because ね carries the feeling of "I am with you". It shows you are listening, so it is very useful at work and with a friend who is unwell.
