A verb has four plain forms. (1) Present affirmative = the dictionary form (飲む). (2) Present negative = the ない form (飲まない). (3) Past affirmative = the た form (飲んだ). (4) Past negative = the なかった form (飲まなかった). For う-verbs (godan), the final syllable shifts to the あ-row before ない; for る-verbs (ichidan), drop る and add ない/た directly (食べる→食べない→食べた). Irregulars: する→しない・した, 来る→こない・きた.
