Being & basics

〜は〜です ~ wa ~ desu X is Y — the sentence that starts everything.

How to build it

Noun + は + Noun + です

私は学生です。

watashi wa gakusei desu.

I am a student.

これはおにぎりです。

kore wa onigiri desu.

This is an onigiri.

キティは先生です。

kitii wa sensei desu.

Kitty is a teacher.

⚠️ Watch out: The particle は is pronounced "wa" here, not "ha".

〜じゃありません ~ ja arimasen is not — the polite negative of です.

How to build it

Noun + じゃありません

学生じゃありません。

gakusei ja arimasen.

I am not a student.

これはお茶じゃありません。

kore wa ocha ja arimasen.

This is not tea.

日本人じゃありません。

nihonjin ja arimasen.

I am not Japanese.

⚠️ Watch out: じゃ is casual-polite; in very formal writing it becomes ではありません.

〜ですか ~ desu ka Turns any statement into a question — no word-order change.

How to build it

Sentence + か

学生ですか。

gakusei desu ka.

Are you a student?

これはお茶ですか。

kore wa ocha desu ka.

Is this tea?

袋はいりますか。

fukuro wa irimasu ka.

Do you need a bag?

⚠️ Watch out: No question mark needed in Japanese — か *is* the question mark.

〜も ~ mo also / too — replaces は or が.

How to build it

Noun + も

私も学生です。

watashi mo gakusei desu.

I am a student too.

お茶もください。

ocha mo kudasai.

Tea as well, please.

明日も行きます。

ashita mo ikimasu.

I will go tomorrow too.

⚠️ Watch out: も replaces は/が — don't say 私はも.

This & that

これ・それ・あれ kore / sore / are this (near me) / that (near you) / that over there.

How to build it

これ/それ/あれ + は + Noun + です

これはおにぎりです。

kore wa onigiri desu.

This is an onigiri.

それは何ですか。

sore wa nan desu ka.

What is that?

あれはコンビニです。

are wa konbini desu.

That over there is a konbini.

⚠️ Watch out: They stand alone — never say これペン; that needs この (next pattern).

この・その・あの+名詞 kono / sono / ano + noun this X / that X — always glued to a noun.

How to build it

この/その/あの + Noun

このおにぎりは百円です。

kono onigiri wa hyaku en desu.

This onigiri is 100 yen.

その袋をください。

sono fukuro o kudasai.

That bag, please.

あの店は安いです。

ano mise wa yasui desu.

That shop over there is cheap.

⚠️ Watch out: この cannot end a sentence — it always needs its noun.

〜の〜 ~ no ~ possession / belonging — Japan's apostrophe-s.

How to build it

Noun + の + Noun

私のかばんです。

watashi no kaban desu.

It is my bag.

日本の食べ物が好きです。

nihon no tabemono ga suki desu.

I like Japanese food.

コンビニのおにぎりはおいしいです。

konbini no onigiri wa oishii desu.

Konbini onigiri are tasty.

⚠️ Watch out: Order is owner → thing: 私の本 = my book, never 本の私.

〜を ~ o marks the object — the thing the verb acts on.

How to build it

Noun + を + Verb

おにぎりを食べます。

onigiri o tabemasu.

I eat an onigiri.

お茶を飲みます。

ocha o nomimasu.

I drink tea.

日本語を勉強します。

nihongo o benkyou shimasu.

I study Japanese.

⚠️ Watch out: Written を but pronounced plain "o" — never "wo".

〜に ~ ni destination or exact time — going TO, happening AT.

How to build it

Place/Time + に

日本に行きます。

nihon ni ikimasu.

I am going to Japan.

七時に起きます。

shichiji ni okimasu.

I wake up at seven.

ここに名前を書いてください。

koko ni namae o kaite kudasai.

Please write your name here.

⚠️ Watch out: Relative times (today, tomorrow) take no に: 明日行きます.

〜で ~ de where an action happens, or the tool you use.

How to build it

Place/Tool + で + Verb

コンビニで働きます。

konbini de hatarakimasu.

I work at a konbini.

カードで払います。

kaado de haraimasu.

I pay by card.

電車で行きます。

densha de ikimasu.

I go by train.

⚠️ Watch out: に = where something *is*; で = where something *happens*.

〜へ ~ e direction — heading towards.

How to build it

Place + へ + movement verb

学校へ行きます。

gakkou e ikimasu.

I am heading to school.

日本へようこそ。

nihon e youkoso.

Welcome to Japan.

うちへ帰ります。

uchi e kaerimasu.

I am going home.

⚠️ Watch out: Written へ but pronounced "e". In most sentences に works too.

〜と ~ to and (between nouns) / together with someone.

How to build it

Noun + と + Noun · Person + と

おにぎりとお茶をください。

onigiri to ocha o kudasai.

An onigiri and tea, please.

友達と行きます。

tomodachi to ikimasu.

I am going with a friend.

先生と話します。

sensei to hanashimasu.

I talk with the teacher.

⚠️ Watch out: と only joins nouns — sentences are joined differently.

〜が ~ ga marks the subject — new info, existence, likes and skills.

How to build it

Noun + が

猫がいます。

neko ga imasu.

There is a cat.

時間があります。

jikan ga arimasu.

I have time.

日本語が好きです。

nihongo ga suki desu.

I like Japanese.

⚠️ Watch out: は = topic (what we talk about); が = subject (who/what does it). Both can appear in one sentence.

Verbs & time

〜ます/〜ません ~ masu / ~ masen polite present: do / do not (and future too).

How to build it

Verb stem + ます/ません

毎日勉強します。

mainichi benkyou shimasu.

I study every day.

肉を食べません。

niku o tabemasen.

I do not eat meat.

明日行きます。

ashita ikimasu.

I will go tomorrow.

⚠️ Watch out: ます covers present *and* future — context decides.

〜ました/〜ませんでした ~ mashita / ~ masen deshita polite past: did / did not.

How to build it

Verb stem + ました/ませんでした

昨日コンビニに行きました。

kinou konbini ni ikimashita.

I went to the konbini yesterday.

おにぎりを買いました。

onigiri o kaimashita.

I bought an onigiri.

朝ご飯を食べませんでした。

asagohan o tabemasen deshita.

I did not eat breakfast.

⚠️ Watch out: ありがとうございました (past) thanks a *finished* favor.

あります/います arimasu / imasu exists / there is — あります for things, います for people & animals.

How to build it

Thing + が + あります · Living + が + います

ATMがあります。

eetiiemu ga arimasu.

There is an ATM.

店員がいます。

ten'in ga imasu.

There is a clerk.

時間がありません。

jikan ga arimasen.

There is no time.

⚠️ Watch out: A person with います, a thing with あります — mixing them sounds very odd.

〜はどこですか ~ wa doko desu ka Where is ~? — your supermarket, station, and toilet lifesaver.

How to build it

Noun + は + どこですか

おにぎりはどこですか。

onigiri wa doko desu ka.

Where are the onigiri?

トイレはどこですか。

toire wa doko desu ka.

Where is the toilet?

駅はどこですか。

eki wa doko desu ka.

Where is the station?

⚠️ Watch out: Answer comes as こちら/そちら/あちら — polite here/there/over there.

〜てください ~ te kudasai please do ~ — polite requests.

How to build it

Verb て-form + ください

ゆっくり話してください。

yukkuri hanashite kudasai.

Please speak slowly.

もう一度言ってください。

mou ichido itte kudasai.

Please say it once more.

ここに来てください。

koko ni kite kudasai.

Please come here.

⚠️ Watch out: For "please give me a THING" use をください instead: お茶をください.

〜たいです ~ tai desu I want to do ~.

How to build it

Verb stem + たいです

日本で働きたいです。

nihon de hatarakitai desu.

I want to work in Japan.

ラーメンを食べたいです。

raamen o tabetai desu.

I want to eat ramen.

日本語が話したいです。

nihongo ga hanashitai desu.

I want to speak Japanese.

⚠️ Watch out: 〜たい is for YOUR wants — for others, say 〜たがっています.

〜ましょう ~ mashou let's do ~ — inviting together.

How to build it

Verb stem + ましょう

一緒に勉強しましょう。

issho ni benkyou shimashou.

Let's study together.

行きましょう。

ikimashou.

Let's go.

日本語で話しましょう。

nihongo de hanashimashou.

Let's talk in Japanese.

⚠️ Watch out: Add か (ましょうか) and it becomes an offer: "shall I…?"

Likes, skills & describing

〜が好きです ~ ga suki desu I like ~ (loves take 大好き).

How to build it

Noun + が + 好きです

日本が好きです。

nihon ga suki desu.

I like Japan.

アニメが大好きです。

anime ga daisuki desu.

I love anime.

納豆が好きじゃありません。

nattou ga suki ja arimasen.

I don't like natto.

⚠️ Watch out: The liked thing takes が, not を — 日本***が***好き.

〜ができます ~ ga dekimasu can do ~ / ~ is possible.

How to build it

Noun + が + できます

日本語が少しできます。

nihongo ga sukoshi dekimasu.

I can speak a little Japanese.

料理ができます。

ryouri ga dekimasu.

I can cook.

カードで払うことができます。

kaado de harau koto ga dekimasu.

You can pay by card.

⚠️ Watch out: 少しできます ("a little") is the humble, natural way to claim a skill.

い形容詞(〜いです) i-adjectives (~ i desu) い-adjectives: end in い, negate with 〜くないです.

How to build it

〜いです → 〜くないです

このおにぎりはおいしいです。

kono onigiri wa oishii desu.

This onigiri is tasty.

日本の夏は暑いです。

nihon no natsu wa atsui desu.

Japanese summers are hot.

高くないです。

takakunai desu.

It is not expensive.

⚠️ Watch out: Never いいくない — いい negates as よくない.

な形容詞(〜です) na-adjectives (~ desu) な-adjectives: act like nouns, take な before a noun.

How to build it

〜です → 〜じゃありません · + な + Noun

日本語は簡単じゃありません。

nihongo wa kantan ja arimasen.

Japanese is not simple.

ここは静かです。

koko wa shizuka desu.

It is quiet here.

きれいな店ですね。

kirei na mise desu ne.

What a clean shop!

⚠️ Watch out: きれい looks like an い-adjective but is な: きれいな, negation きれいじゃない.

〜をください ~ o kudasai please give me ~ — ordering and shopping.

How to build it

Noun + を + ください

これをください。

kore o kudasai.

This one, please.

お水をください。

omizu o kudasai.

Water, please.

レシートをください。

reshiito o kudasai.

A receipt, please.

⚠️ Watch out: Pointing + これをください survives any shop in Japan.
